Customer Reviews of Magic Knight Rayearth 2: Mem Coll 2 (Dub)
A GREAT BUY for all MKR and Non-MKR fans! I absolutely loved the second season of the MKR series. It was very dramatic in the telling of the story. I, personally, didn't mind the dubbed voices. They weren't bad like I expected them to be. I can't compare them to the Japanese version because I've only seen the version dubbed in Spanish (which in my opinion is a slightly better dub and has better acting than the english one).
The story basically begins right where it left off from the first season. The girls Fuu, Umi, and Hikaru (or as they're known in the spanish version Anonome, Marina, and Lucy) are returned to Tokyo, but are agonizing over what they had to do in order to save Cephiro... The girls meet up to talk about their feelings and mysteriously return to Cephiro. When they arrive they are shocked to see that the world that fought so desperately to save is in shambles. After talking to Clef, who also surprised to see them but happy, he tells them Cephiro's condition is due to the fact that Cephiro no longer has a pillar. Anyhow the girls' vow to stay and help find Cephiro's new pillar but that's not all. They must also protect it from outside invaders from three other countries. To make things more complicated in seems there's some kind of evil entity, who also is interested in Cephiro's pillar system.
This season is a bit more dramatic and the girls do come off a bit more mature in their thinking. I really loved the blossoming romance between Fuu and Ferio (they're so cute). Hikaru and Umi also find love as well. There's a bit of love triangle for Hikaru. Anyway, you'll definetely enjoy all the swordplay and the action involved in the second season. The plot is less predictable and bit more interesting. The final volume (Live) has to be the best of the episodes. I loved the fight scene between the girls and Debonair. All of the drama and emotion in these particular episodes are excellent. The animation is gorgeous in the last episode when the girls are floating down from their rune god. I don't want to say to much accept that i reccommend that you check this out. I guarantee you won't be disappointed, except by the fact that there's no season three. *sniff, sniff*
The Magic Knights live on!
Before I start the review I have something to say: DO NOT READ THIS REVIEW IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE ENTIRE FIRST SERIES. I can not give a proper review for this without mentioning stuff from it. And I will try very hard not to give away any spoilers for this series.
The story takes place after the 3 Magic Knights Umi, Fuu, & Hikaru have returned from Cephiro after being forced to kill princess Emeraude in order to save Cephiro. Each of the 3 girls have had a very heavy heart since then and all wish that they did not have to do it.
And ever since returning to Earth Hikaru has been having horrible dreams with an unknown, but undoubtedly evil being in it.
It's this that brings the girls together again at the Tokyo Tower and returning to Cephiro, but this time not knowing how it was that they got there.
Upon their arrival we are re-introduced to all of the characters from the first series ( Minus Emeraude and Zagato of course.) as well as many newcomers such as Lantis. (Who is Zagato's younger brother.)
The Magic Knights see that the land is far worse off than it was before they left due to the fact that a new pillar has not yet been found and Cephiro will crumble away to nothing if one is not.
Knowing this, 3 different countries try to invade Cephiro in hopes of gaining the Pillar System, each having their own motives for doing so. The 3 countries are: Faran, Chizeta, and Autozam. Each of the countries have an important person leading them. Faran has Princess Aska, who comes off very well as a bratty stuck up princess. Chizeta has it's two princesses, sisters Tarta & Tatra. One being very tomboyish while the other is very open and friendly.
And Autozam has Eagle Vision. This guy is so COOL! Some of my favorite moments in the anime revolve around this guy. He is definitely my favorite character in the series, with Fuu coming in 2nd. He is basically your honorble bad guy type. He wants to help his homeland, but he does not feel right about invading Cephiro.
The Magic Knights will have to deal with the threat of these 3 countries as well as the threat of Lady Debonair. A very evil woman who wants to see Cephiro dissapear. Along with her is her rather psychotic daughter Nova who will constantly hound Hikaru.
I will admit that at first I didn't think this was that good. Mainly because in this one the main focus of the story is Hikaru. And she has never been my favorite Magic Knight. That title belongs to Fuu.
But it doesn't take long to get good and by the 2nd tape I was hooked.
Now time for the dubbing. If I had a choice to watch either the dubbed or the subbed, I probably would've chosen the subbed version. But since I didn't I watched the dubbed version.
I had watched the whole first series in Subbed and when I started watching this is thought: MY GOD! The majority of the voices aren't done very well. Hikaru no doubt, has the worst voice in the series, with Ferio coming in a close 2nd. But then some of them are done very well too. Aska for example sounds very annoying, but it fits her personality very well. Also Nova's voice sounds pretty convincing for a psycho.
And with Eagles kind sounding voice it is easy to tell that he isn't some kind of a tough badass.
But it's Fuu that has the best voice. It's probably why I like her so much. Just like Eagle she has a gentle sounding voice and that was exactly how I imagined her sounding in english.
And oddly enough I found I liked the opening music al ot more in english than in Japanese. I actually liked it so much that I memorized it.
As for the animation, at first it looked exactly the same as the first series. But as it went on I noticed that it gradually seemed to get better.
This is a great series and I would reccomend it to anyone, especially fans of anime by Clamp.
WOW!
I must say this is top notch front of the line animation and the story is fab!
