Apple's long awaited new operating system brings more than 200 new features to Mac users. Technically speaking, Tiger boasts an open source core, 64-bit system, and support for the High Definition H.264 video codec. But, every user will enjoy the highlights of this new release: a new search tool, cool new mini applications, real-time RSS feeds in the browser, improved email, amped up audio and visual conferencing, parental controls, automation of tedious, repetitive tasks, and the list goes on.

OS-Level Search: Spotlight
Handled by Tiger's search technology, Spotlight, users may search across documents, images, movies, music, PDFs, email, calendar events, and system preferences with one keyword. Spotlight reviews text content, filenames, and keywords (metadata) applied by users and automatically stored by files to return search results. Results are fast and smart, providing previews of returned files and the ability to filter them by kind, date, people, and location.

More Robust Conferencing: iChat AV
iChat AV updates the Panther version with various new features. Enjoy three-dimensional, multi-participant video meetings with better resolution and compression. Conduct audio conferences with up to 10 members utilizing a graphical panel with sound meters for each speaker that indicate who is speaking. Purchase and run your own Tiger server and conduct instant messaging behind your firewall.

With multiple profiles, parents can set varying levels of access for each child. Even downloaded or emailed applications are subject to parental approval first.

Drop and Drag Tool Panels: Dashboard
Pull in mini applications from a menu, named the Dashboard, to complete frequent tasks, like tracking flights and stocks or looking up words in the dictionary. Add and rearrange these panels, called "widgets," on your desktop as you choose, and hide or show them with the click of a button. Some other widgets include a calendar, calculator, weather report, yellow pages, language translator and unit converter.

Customer Reviews of Mac OS X v10.4.3 Tiger (DVD) [Old Version]

Stable and pretty? Yes. Worth the upgrade from 10.3? Arguably, no.
If you're reading this review, odds are you own a Mac a little over 1.5 years old (with 10.3 preinstalled) and are considering the Tiger update. Even more so at its now discounted price (with a new OS looming on the horizon). Is it worth the price and effort to take the plunge? Unless you're a cutting-edge user running a G5 system, probably not. <
> <
>G3 users will find Tiger painfully slow, G4 ones passable. Several of the newer features embedded in Tiger -- most notably Spotlight, Dashboard and iChat AV -- tend to crawl at lesser processing speeds and/or units with mid/low-level RAM configuations. Moreover, most Mac techies will secretly agree that Tiger is eons away from the stability that Panther provided. <
> <
>Simply put, too many Tiger updates in too short a time quietly plague the system and 3rd party software (RAM drain, individual software functionality, Web browser plug-in) stability. Further muddying the OS waters is the recent release of Intel-based Macs and the requirement to provide dual release (universal binary)versions of software for both PowerPC and Intel chipsets. In contrast, OS 10.3.9 is arguably the most stable version of the OS X operating system ever produced. Biting the bullet for a couple more years life out your Mac and 10.3 is likely in your best interest before taking the newer hardware/software plunge. <
> <
>With this being said, this is an essential upgrade for power users. Limited support exists for 10.3, some of the best shareware/freeware programs that enrich the OS X experience now almost 10.4 exclusive. Moreover, hard to stay away from the bells and whistles 10.4 compatibility provides. While buggier, it remains a prettier, more powerful 10.3.

If I could put negative 1 trillion stars I would
There is no question. This is probably the worst operating system to ever come out into the computer industry. Basically, its a piece... Well, you know what I mean. I promise you, there is a VERY GOOD REASON WHY WINDOWS IS THE MOST POPULAR OS IN THE WORLD. Most of what this OS has is stolen from other OS's, even things like widgets (on the dashboard), minimizing windows (from Microsoft Windows), the very NAME "Windows" (used to describe open applications on the desktop), maximizing windows, virtually everything on it is copied from other OS's, and there is a reason why Apple did this. Their OS is terrible, and they needed to steal from other companies in order to make theirs popular, which even now isn't as popular as Windows, which it stole primarily from. The reason I am writing this review isn't just to trash something on the net, its to help others not fall into the trap that Apple makes out of its OS. Sure, alot of proffesional people use it, but that's because they only need to do one thing, and Apple can do that, but nothing else. If you need to do anything other than browse the web (Apple can't even do that very well, with Safari), then get Windows.

Buying a Mac? Learn about OSx86 and VMware.
Apple announced that Intel core duo processors will be used in the new range of Macs. Hardware developers and programmers and just about everyone else ask what is stopping OSX from running on a non-apple computer with Intel processors... turns out that there was not much except for some code in the OSX software. Then somebody changes the code in the fall of 2005. Now everyone who wants to see and use OSX before they buy gets VMware, obtains a copy of OSx86 and boots the latest Mac OS on Windows or Linux. This is not dual booting. VMware is virtualization software. Modern hardware is fast enough to run other Operating Systems at 75% or above speed at the same time. Seeing OSX running on Windows or Linux will have eyes open wide in the room around you. For Mac users who have shelled out their hard earned cash on a Mac, seeing this reaches down into the very depth of the soul. Apple announces a new boot camp that allows Macs to dual boot Windows, but not virtualize it. Back in the 80s - 90s there was good reason to own Mac hardware. In the 21st century all hardware companies are mostly using third world sources to build their components. So in terms of Mac hardware versus clone PCs, there is not much difference anymore. OSx86 booting on a non-apple computer is the biggest event in the history of Apple Macintosh. It will make you think. <
> <
>OSX is great. For anyone who has booted Linux or FreeBSD can see the advantages of having a desktop that is better than Gnome or KDE. That is OSX. Beneath OSX is a type of FreeBSD-like system. That is a UNIX-like system. Mac software does cost money though. There isn't much more to this topic other than the above. This is the current model of thought when it comes to OSX. There are many in denial that OSx86 exists. The development is that significant. Just learn about it. Then consider your next move.
