Customer Reviews of LucasArts Archive Series: Star Wars Episode 1 - Battle for Naboo
Good, But Not Good Enough Another game in the same spirit as Rogue Squadron and even aspects of Shadows of the Empire, it serves as a decent diversion, but it has the strongest "console-to-PC port" feel about it of the three.
The graphics are okay, but nothing special. PCs can do much niftier stuff than this title offers up. To their credit, some of the model textures are surprisingly detailed, but they tend to stick out as exceptions, and not the rule.
The music, while serviceable, isn't as good as it could be (sounds like MIDI, instead of streaming CD audio of some kind).
The sound is pretty standard Star Wars game fare, which is a good thing.
The controls tended to feel sluggish, and sometimes ponderous - you'll definitely want to play this one with an analog control stick and NOT a digital pad!
The draw distance in this game is also a problem. While likely better than its N64 counterpart, it's still not good enough. You'll likely see enemy blips on your radar LONG before you'll actually see them to fire at them. This oftentimes creates a last-minute scramble to hit the enemy in question, as you come up on it too fast and it pops into view suddenly. The same goes for any mission where you can control the altitude of your ship - the radar might show an enemy VERY close by, but if it's a ground unit, you'll fly yourself in circles trying to actually see it, unless you get quite low to the ground. This, I feel, is the game's biggest problem.
Unfortunately, this title feels like it was rushed. Its predecessor, Rogue Squadron, felt much more polished and rewarding. This one feels like it needed more time in the oven.
Surely a must-have for any completist, Star Wars gaming fan, but I'd recommend waiting for it to hit the bargain bin. And definitely check out the demo first.
MY REVIEW
Battle for naboo is a pretty fun game. my favorite vehicle is the gian speeder. you will probably get stuck alot, but dont
worry there are tons of cheat codes. after you beat it once it is pretty boring though. THE GOOD- there are tons of levels and tons of vehichles to choose from. Pretty good graphics. You can blow up almost anything. THE BAD- no bosses, tanks and destroyer
droids are hard to blow up. and you dont walk around.
BFN: Fun, pretty, but not challenging
This game is a little old now, but it still looks great. While the graphics aren't on par with the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter, they are a giant leap above the old favorite: Rogue Squadron. In RS, there was a perpetual mist right in front of you, and you couldn't see more than about 100 yards in front of you. BFN draws landscapes all the way out to the horizon.
In addition, BFN has a much more entertaining and linear plot than RS (Which didn't have much of a plot at all!), and since most of the missions end with a cliffhanger, you want to play the next one.
I have heard some complaints that this game was a flop because you don't care about the characters. True, none of the people in this game were actually IN Episode 1, but you will find that you play a significant role in the events there.
In closing, I would like to say that while this game is great fun, and I still continually play it, I beat the whole thing in two days of mad computer playing, so maybe this game isn't quite challenging enough....
