Customer Reviews of Loverboy
Early 80's ROCK Loverboy's dubut album "Loverboy" starts out with two of my favorite 80's rock tunes, The Kid Is Hot Tonite" and "Turn Me Loose". I remember back in my college days playing these songs prior to heading out to the clubs. Great party songs that brought us into the 80's and the MTV era!
While "The Kid" has more of the traditional 80's sound, "Turn Me Loose" is heavier and has clearly stood the test of time. There are a few other good songs as well, such as "Lady of the 80's" and "Always On My Mind", but for me, everything else is pretty much filler. Three 1/2 stars (5 for the first 2 songs and 3 for the rest). Better off getting the Greatest Hits CD.
Wish I was growing up in 1980
Loverboy's self titled debut in my opinion is Loverboy's best album cause it has my favorite song 'The Kid is Hot Tonite' and it should've been a rock anthem instead of the overrated 'Working For the Weekend'. Other key tracks are 'Turn Me Loose' 'Always on My Mind' 'Prissy Prissy' 'Teenage Overdose' and 'It Don't Matter' the latter reminds me of this one girl that I went to school with and to this day, I wish that me and her can still see each other but oh well, there are more important things in life than beautiful women, like concentrating on the future, 'Nuff said.
Anyways, if you like new wave rock from the late 70's/mid 80's, then you should get this album and 1980 should've been a better year for pop music than it really was. Seems like the only artists have huge selling platinum albums were Christopher Cross and Air Supply, and they don't even come close to Loverboy.
Loverboy is "Turned Loose" in 1980!!!
Loverboy is probably one of the most underrated groups of the 80's, and they deserve a lot more recognition for their talent, and excellent musicianship. Loverboy's pop-rock debut is fun to listen to, and features terrific keyboard work from Doug Johnson, a powerful, flawless bass from Scott Smith, catchy beats from Matt Frenette, perfect guitar craftsmanship from Paul Dean, and great, intense vocals from Mike Reno. Their hits off the album, "The Kid Is Hot Tonight" and "Turn Me Loose," are awesome. Frenette puches out some very catchy beats, and Johnson's keyboards soar with melodic perfection. Also listen to Johnson's magic on the groovey, "Prissy Prissy," and "DOA." "Always On My Mind" is a slower-paced song, that has nice flow and a groovey rhythm. "Lady Of The 80's" and "Little Girl," are much faster, rapid songs that make you want to get up and stomp your feet or go for a run down the street. Reno with guitarist, Dean, create some terrific harmonies and Dean gives our ears catchy, edgy guitar melodies. "Teenage Overdose" and "DOA" are two of my favorite songs on the album. "Teenage Overdose" shows off some great, rugged guitar talent by Dean, and he and Reno's harmonies are really neat! I like the melodic sounds on "DOA" with intensity from Dean mixed in. This whole album is a fine dose of melodic, classic pop-rock, and Loverboy shows that they are masters at what they do. This album is the start of what was to come. Loverboy may have not gotten the recognition they deserved, but they get plenty of recognition in my book. They are one of the best groups around. Another reviewer mentioned the messages that Loverboy gives in songs like "Teenage Overdose" and "DOA." Indeed, Loverboy not only provides fun, but they get real meaningful words out while they're at it! Add Loverboy to your list of favorite groups, and pick this album up!
