Customer Reviews of Lotus
Two very intense hours This album comes from a 1973 tour of Japan to support the Caravanserai album. It was originally released in 1974 only in Japan. It was a 3 LP set with some nice oddly shaped fold out posters. If you wanted it, you had to buy the Japanese import at a very steep price. It now comes in reasonably priced CD. On most versions of the CD, the artwork is intact but shrunk to CD dimensions.
The Santana band was in transition. Greg Rollie and Neal Schon had left to form Journey. The group's sound had changed to a much richer, and deeper sound. Instead of being "lighter", more accesible Latin sound with pop type vocals, it was now a darker, multi layered sound, with any vocals being in the background.
For the tour, the group played a style that was a mixture between the styles of Abraxas and Caravanserai. The music is a little brighter than Caravanserai, but it is very intense and high energy. They just start playing and don't stop. Incident at Neshabar is an incredible, exhausting 16 minutes. The finale of Toussaint L'Overture will leave your head spinning. For this tour, they bring along Leon Thomas for vocals, but he doesn't have much to do.
I saw Santana in Tucson during this tour, shortly after this album was recorded. By then, they became completely unaccessable to the audience. They played in front a big, tilted mirror, so you got an enlarged view of their backs. They just got up and played. They did not talk to the audience at all. In addition, they dropped all the hits from their setlist. People in the audience started spreading a rumor that Carlos Santana wasn't even with the group on stage. In spite of the group's aloofness, it was a fantastic show. Weather Report was the opening band. As always, Santana brought out the members of the opening band to jam on the encore.

The sound quality of the original LP was very good. To be honest, I haven't heard the CD version, but other reviewers complained about the sound. This might be one of those times when a poor job was done transferring the music to CD's. In the early days of CD's, many CD's had very poor sound quality. That is why people thought CD's were inferior to LP's. And that is why you see many CD's advertising Digital Remastering, to distinguish themselves from the poor quality earlier releases of the same album.

Truly excellent.
I recently bought this item a few weeks ago, ad after the first listen through, my impression of the album was nothing less than, "Wow. Truly exellent. This is the Mona Lisa masterpeice of guitar music." It manages to showcase some of Santana's early work, the latin-pop-rock-blues, as well as including the Santana band's later, more Jazz and spiritually infused music. It also includes the 16 minute masterpeice "Incident at Neshabur", my favorite song of all time.
BUY IT, FEEL IT, DIG IT, BABY!
