While Lost in Space may never enter the pantheon of great television programming, the 1960s sci-fi show certainly has its charms, all of them in evidence on this first volume of episodes from the second season. Produced by Irwin Allen, who would later be responsible for blockbuster disaster films like The Towering Inferno and The Poseidon Adventure, these 16 episodes from 1966-67 (spread out over four DVDs) find the show undergoing some changes, both technically (from black & white into color) and in terms of tone (more campy and tongue-in-cheek, especially as the season goes on). The latter is due in large part to the performance of Jonathan Harris as Dr. Zachary Smith, who puts the "arch" in archvillain (it was his meddling that got them all lost in the first place). Harris's portrayal of Smith as cowardly, duplicitous, pompous, and not a little fey often goes right over the top, but the other characters (including Guy Williams as Prof. John Robinson, June Lockhart as his wife Maureen, and young Bill Mumy as Will) are so bland and generic that Harris, the family robot, and guest stars like Strother Martin and Wally Cox offer the only available relief.

The Lost in Space storylines are predictable (almost always involving some alien-related jeopardy prompted by Smith's greed and foolishness) and the special effects and production values won't excite anyone used to the wonders of the digital age. Still, this is television, where budgets are smaller and schedules much tighter, so lowered expectations are in order anyway. Some users may feel shortchanged by the absence of extra features, or by the fact that the set doesn't include the entire season (the second part is available separately). But the transfers are good and the DVD menus easily navigable. But on the whole Lost in Space devotees--and there are many of them--should be well satisfied. --Sam Graham

Customer Reviews of Lost in Space - Season 2, Vol. 1

We're Not Happy, But What Choice Do We Have?
Okay...It is extremely disappointing that the choice was made to release only half the series to North Americans and the whole season to the U.K. While I agree that this is unfair and likely a money making scheme, what choice do we have? We should be happy they are releasing it at all. If we don't buy this and sales are down, chances are the 2nd half won't be released! We can only hope that we will get some additional features that do not come with the other version.

**I want to add that people should not go out and buy the U.K. version as it has region 2 encoding and will not work on North American DVD players!! Some computers will play both formats, but be extremely careful. You also have to pay duty on anything you buy from the U.K. as I found out the other day when I ordered something from that site.**

I just loved this series growing up and as a 9 year old girl watching re-runs of this show, I thought Penny was just the greatest! This is one of the best family shows that was ever made. It has adventure, romance, and humour nicely blended together. My Mom and I are enjoying watching the first season together this summer. All I can say is that I cannot wait until the 2nd season is released whether it is in 2 parts or one. I'm afraid we will have to petition the company to change their minds, or else get used to the idea. We can show our support by buying this edition though, to encourage them to release the rest of the series.

WHAT IDIOT AT FOX IS MAKING THESE DECISIONS?
I can't beleive that Fox is releasing only half of the 2nd season of LIS. It seems that they are releasing only half to test the waters in terms of sales, not to make more money because 'the sales of the 1st season were so great'.
First they screwed up by not releasing the series in a box set in its entirety...then they release season 1 to see how well it sells before releasing season 2. Only problem is that of all 3 seasons, season 1 is by far the least popular and the one that people associate least when remembering the series. Even though I like seaon 1 and am grateful to have it it is not an accurate measure of the sales potential of the rest of the series.
I don't understand when I see some series on DVD in their entirety or on a definite path to it, and here LIS is released up to season 2 in the United Kingdom and not here.
Obviously, the person who has final say on these decisions at Fox somehow managed to 'Forrest Gump' their way to that position.
It just goes to show that just because someone may have a high paying job or be in a decision making role that they don't always have the juice to pull it off.

Gliches
I am Damien Valentino, and I love watching LIS since I was a small kid back home - Singapore. I bought the Full First Season...If you had watched some of the episodes (can't recall which one), you will notice at a certain segment of the episode, the Robot has human legs and a wire attached to it...It was very clear. Also, in other episodes, you can see the studio's microphone coming into view at the top of your screen. I thought all these movie gliches were neat!!!

I have order the Second Season Part I and the bad part is that it will come in September!!! I can't wait to have 2 complete seasons!
