Customer Reviews of Long Lonesome Blues: Lemon's Texts Revealed
A Leg In Unless there's some major break through in audio technology, Blind Lemon Jefferson's recorded legacy will always be accompanied by that annoying white noise hiss. But thanks to the painstaking work of the folks at Arbiter, the lyrics have been successfully transcribed for the first time. This allows the curious a leg into a world that is shadowy at best. Next to Charley Patton, Blind Lemon was a seminal influence on a whole generation of artists spanning from Blues legends' Son House & Robert Johnson to John Lee Hooker. Not to mention, Dylan, Clapton & even current critical darlings like, The White Stipes. Yet to the modern ear, the sound quality of his work is reserved for only the obsessively ardent of Blues fans.
Without a doubt, this is the best sound possible by today's standards. So if you're curious, this is the collection for you. For the first time, the lyrical transcriptions highlight the wit and pathos of a true genius. His guitar chops notwithstanding. Try on "Electric Chair Blues" on for size. Here's a sample line: "I wonder why they electrocute a man at the one o'clock hour of night...Because the current is much stronger, when the folks has turned out all the lights"...
My favorite version of the oft revised & covered "Jack O' Diamonds" is without a doubt Blind Lemon's. Spare, sparse & catchy as hell. For Blues fans, "Black Snake Moan " is a classic. A harrowing tale of loneliness slowly turning into madness. Coupled with a sly reference to self gratification. As far as we know, Lemon wrote it. Or atleast recorded it 1st. The same goes for "Corrina Blues" (a.ka. "C.C. Rider").
In other words, this is the closest you'll get to a definitive collection. And it's a generous helping of tracks for your buck. Although, by no means "hiss-free", it sounds better than any collection I've previously heard. Plus, the transcriptions are priceless.
