Customer Reviews of Living Yoga's Lower Body Yoga for Beginners
Not for beginners The spoken instructions are not always complete. When I try to perform the routine along with the tape, I frequently need to crane my neck to see what Suzanne Deason is talking about. If I don't watch what is going on, I end up doing something wrong. There is no warm-up, and the pace is fairly quick. You should probably be familiar with yoga poses before attempting this routine because there are no instructions as to how to position the body properly. At the end of the tape, Deason demonstrates some useful modifications that use blocks and straps.
Challenging for beginners, but a great routine
This routine is an excellent workout for the lower body. When I first viewed the tape, I wondered how I would ever get into some of the poses even though I've been doing yoga for over a year. However, try them all, you will be surprised what you can do if you try and go only as far as you are able. I felt it was a wonderful workout after I completed the routine once myself.
However, like many have mentioned, this is not a true beginner's tape! You need to be quite familiar with yoga postures and modifications of the postures so as not to hurt yourself. Some modifications are given at the end of the tape, but I don't feel that they are thoroughly detailed. I feel that I only knew how to modify correctly because I have viewed Yoga Journal's Yoga for Beginners (a tape that simple explains the poses) and many of the other Living Yoga and Yoga Journal tapes (they all have the same instructors).
Another minus for beginners (including myself) is the pace of the routine. As with the Upper Body Yoga and Abs Yoga in the same series, I find myself often pausing the tape during the routine to get into correct form. Then I'm able to move on with the routine.
But I still have to say, it is a great workout!
Good video but not for beginners
This a good tape, but I do not think it should be labeled as for beginners. Her poses require flexibility that a beginner just will not have yet developed.
Also, unlike other beginners videos, the instructor does not offer visual modifications to the poses for those not flexible enough to perform the poses as shown. Perhaps most importantly, she does not verbally address the fact that it's ok to not be this flexible as a beginner and that one should go at one's own pace.
I found this video very frustrating and not at all nurturing.
