Customer Reviews of Live in Paris
Great Performance! This one took me by surprise. I loved her "When I look into your Eyes" CD but found her last effort "the Look of Love" to be a bit less than stellar (although still good).... it had a few nice songs but also some things that just didn't stay with me over time and thus found its way hidden in my stack of music.
This live CD just knocked my socks off. The same songs I liked on her last CD appear here with, in my opinion, FAR stronger arrangements. As an added bonus, she plays piano quite a bit more as well and there is less focus on the orchestra. Both "Look of Love" and "S'Wonderful" are just **outstanding** to the highest degree on the live CD, far far eclipsing the already decent versions on the studio CD preceeding this one. As for the others, not really a dud in the bunch. I've never had the luck to see Diana Krall live, but after hearing this one, I sure wish to hell I had. The "studio" track of Billy Joels classic "Just the way you are" that she stuck onto the CD ain't bad either, and seeing how often I've heard that song that is saying something.
Bottom line: Highly, highly recommended, especially for those of you who thought her last effort missed some of the feel of her earlier work. Recording quality is quite nice and natural too; maybe not up to the studio stuff, but definitely the usual high standards from Schmitt, LiPuma and mastering engineer Doug Sax.
She's back! And in Paris!
I have been waiting, not too patiently for over a year for Diane's next album. The last one, The Look of Love was somewhat disappointing for a fan like me who loves to hear Ms. Krall wail on her sohpisticated jazz piano...This one really Swings! Starting with the first track, a hip Peggy Lee number; I Love Being Here with You,( with a mystery reference to Ray Brown). As I listened to the beautifully engineered live
recording, my mind flashed back to some of my all time favorite "Live" recordings such as Brubeck's Jazz Goes to College, Errol Concert's Concert in Carmel, and Ahmad Jamal Live at the Pershing. This album will be right up there with those classics....Why? The energy, the enthusiasm Krall and the boys bring to this CD, the obvious warmth of the audience....but MOST of all hearing Diane SWING again. Her piano playing is a joy to hear. The excellent back up work with some creative guitar work by Anthony Wilson, great bass work including a solo with the bow by John Clayton, and the missing drums from All for You...Really rounds out the sound for Ms. Krall. She is a great blend of new/old sounds with a marvelous appreciation for her precedessors. This album might also be billed as a tribute to the George Shearing Quintet. She uses a big, FAT, great Shearing sound to great effect and even includes vibes but I found no credit for the vibe player.
All in all a great album...Why only 4.5 stars? I would have liked a few more new songs! Here's hoping Diane is hard at work on her next album...with plenty of great new solos like the best I have heard her do on Deed I Do. I recommend you get 2 copies...one for home and one for the car...You won't want to be anywhere without easy access to Live in Paris
One of Diana's Best
I bought "Girl in the Other Room" and did not care for that depressing album at all. But when a friend played this for me, I could not believe it was the same singer. This is an amazing album, full of swing, sass, life and great orchestration, everything the other album is not. I am going to have to listen to her other previous albums now. This one was wonderful, I hope there is more from this singer like this!
