Customer Reviews of Live in Japan
Very Good Live Set I didn't expect much from this release. Boy was I surprised. I can't believe MCA has been holding on to this gem for so long. Like the previous reviewer said, it is a no bs set with a lot of great instrumental work. This definately is not like "Live At The Regal," it is closer to the Cook County Jail gig but it seems everyone was having a great time and B.B. really cuts loose. It is the same band recorded 6 months after the Cook County Jail recording. It is a very good live set from the king of the blues. Excellent sound quality.
King at his best
This recording has a different feel from Live at the Regal or Live from Cook County Jail. There is much less playing with and talking to the audience. Instead, this one is just powerful, full-steam blues guitar playing all the way through. B. B.'s singing is very soulful here, but he keeps it short and lets the guitar do most of the singing. You won't find better versions of his classic songs anywhere. The jam sessions show a jazz-blues master at work and is something generally not heard these days. Great cd.
Essential Blues Release
Even if you own "Live at the Regal", you can't go wrong picking this up. Just as "Miles In Tokyo" benefits from audience reception, so too does "Live In Japan". It really is that good.
There's an exhuberance on this recording that can rarely be found in live 'blues' albums. The band is spot-on, the solos are immaculate, and the recording is clear as a whistle. On top of that, it's a double-album worth of material, and none of it is filler.
