Comparable in quality to a VHS videocassette, a VCD holds 74 minutes of compressed audio/video programming, while an SVCD packs in as much as 80 minutes (at slightly lower resolution). The recording deck functions as a computer CD writer, using affordable data-grade CDs (as opposed to the slightly pricier discs earmarked for "music" or "audio") to write AV or audio-only discs.
