Customer Reviews of Liberty
Tough call This is perhaps the most enigmatic Duran Duran CD recorded. People either love it or hate it or like me, even after 9 years, still aren't sure. "Violence of Summer" is a catchy, but ridiculously weak track. "Liberty" has that Notorious flavor to it, but the song should be a minute shorter. "Hothead"'s funky guitar riffs and foot-tapping beat makes this one of the most underrated tracks on the CD. "Serious" may be one of Duran Duran's best tracks ever recorded, with all five musicians doing a spectacular job on this basic pop track. "All Along The Water", though a dance track, gets pretty tiring, as does fellow thumper, "Can You Deal With It", the pristine "My Antartica" and the wanna-be jammer, "Read My Lips". "First Impression" and "Venice Drowning" struck me as hidden treasures on this CD. "Downtown", whose intoxicated melody and annoying background vocals makes this one of the worst Duran songs I have ever heard. Liberty is not a bad CD, but you really have to spend a lot of time with it to appreciate it.
A new decade, a new Duran Duran
Duran Duran's 1990 classic "Liberty" was instantly adored by the critics and it sold millions all over the world. As with all their albums, "Liberty" was certified diamond by the RIAA. Wow, how many groups do you know have every studio album certified diamond? Duran Duran is unmatched in terms of skills, credibility, and sales. Hits like "Violence of Summer" and "Serious" are incredible. You must must must get this album. Give me "Liberty" or give me death!
Underrated
I love this album. It's very different from their other work in many ways but it's unique, I think and full of vitality.
Violence of the Summer is a dizzy, maddening ride that fits the direction of the song. I just love this song. It's great. It's why I bought the album and I was so relieved that the rest of the songs didn't disappoint me. This song I believe is about reckless living and it has quite a morbid edge to it but on the otherhand it's upbeat, and like I said before, a dizzy ride. This contrast I love. It's actually kind of like Vertigo in that sense (the dizziness leading way to chaos that is). It's creative compared to other songs of death and suicide (this song is basically about succumbing to tragedy with the line "slow death is on the way, so what man I still want to play"). Not a good thing but done in an interesting way.
Liberty--Fabulous opening. Some good points but not really catchy. The lyrics are ok.
Hothead---Really out there. A toss-up. You probably will either love it or hate it with few in-betweens. There is no melody to speak of (it's all pretty much spoken, really) and it basically deals with headlines in the news and the decline of the nation. Kind of annoying really.
Serious--This is their only big hit on the album. I think it's ok. I never cared much for the tune but the lyrics are pretty good.
All Along the Water---Only Duran Duran could make a song about water sound dirty. But that's what they do here. Raunchy from start to finish. But the tune I loved and the vocals were great too. The song is a guilty pleasure.
My Antarctica---A beautiful melody with sweet lyrics. Kind of haunting really.
First Impression---Fast, upbeat song about "little Johnny from the backstreets of the UK". I wonder if this is based on a person they know? Maybe not. Johnny is a kind of common name to use. I love the backup vocals here. It starts off with Simon singing alone but as it moves along, others join in, echoing what he says which sets up the perfect atmosphere for what I feel the song is saying, about leaving a "lasting first impression". Very cool.
Read My Lips---Starts off pretty good but goes downhill quickly. Reminds me of that roller-rink Happy Wheels for some reason. I don't know why. Maybe it's the kind of song you'd hear there, maybe I'm just weird.
Can You Deal With It?---Never got into this. Duran Duran has had simple chorus's before but a lot of times they work. "All She Wants Is" is the perfect example. Very powerful, I believe. Here I can see why they might have done this but it just gets on my nerves for some reason when the whole chorus is "Can you handle it?", "Can you deal with it?" The tune is annoying too.
Venice Drowning---Very sexy-sounding song. What is it with Duran Duran and their water perversion? At times it seems very poetic but in one of those uncomfortable ways. You know the poets that give you more information than you want to know. They have a controversial rhyme in there, something that rhymes with their line "with the scarlet Catechism" but I won't say what it is because I just won't. But this is another song that I'm ashamed to say I can somewhat appreciate. It's mysterious.
Downtown---Great song and I don't know why people hate it. I can see not taking to it but to say it's not only bad but the worst song on the album? Ok, this will depend on varying opinions. I think it's a very dark piece but this time it sounds really dark, even though it still has a cool beat. Really evil-sounding, in some ways satirical I would say, mimicking the corruption of the city at the same time giving off that underlying message to steer clear of "Downtown", whatever "Downtown" may refer to because "You never come home". It has that unredemptive feel to it.
Anyway, the cover features picture after picture of the band on vacation which is hilarious (they just milk that image of themselves to death). But good album. Warren Cuccurullo and Sterling Campbell were an asset to the band, definitely.
