Customer Reviews of Let It Be
Best American Rock Album of the 80's I was first exposed to this album by my roommate after I read that The Strokes were a Mats influenced band. After purchasing the double disk best of set, I expected a raspy, moody Paul and a raw guitar sound. But I was quite surpised by the emotional range and the creative and signature guitar tone. The drive of "I Will Dare," and "Favorite Thing," the distorted pop of "Androgenous, the contempt within "Seen Your Video," and "Sixteen Blues'" guitar tone truly make this album a classic. The Replacement's attitude is what I enjoy the most. The type of 'devil may care' attitude that puts a KISS cover on their indie rock album, who'll sing about the beauty of love in alternative relationships, openly display their disgust towards corporate music and use a phrase that The Beatle's coined to title their album. Through the range of emotions and creative influences does "Let it Be" truly stand apart as one of the best Rock albums of the Eighties. Before there was Nirvana, the Goo Goo Dolls, or The Strokes there was the Replacements. They were pioneers.
Look me in the eye, then tell me that I'm...
Satisfied. Big time.
The 'Mats are kind of a strange phenomenon. This is one of THE MOST uneven albums ever, but somehow still manages to be one of the best. One song is almost worthless (Gary's Got A Boner), two are so-so (Androgynous, Tommy Get's His Tonsils Out), one is good but nothing special (Black Diamond). Of course, the other seven songs are among the best I've ever heard.
They start out with "I Will Dare" and "Favorite Thing" which are classic pop-alternative cuts. "We're Coming Out" is a tearing, screaming punk rave up anthem (and stellar driving music). "Unsatisfied" and "Answering Machine" capture the despair that everyone feels at least once in their life, and keep the hooks-a-catchin'. "Sixteen Blue" is an almost peerless teen anthem, and "Seen Your Video" is a fun Up Yours to video generation "rock".
Paul Westerbergs songwriting really carries this album, and his ability to mix poignant songwriting, post-punk energy, and pop hooks really make him one of rocks true unheralded geniuses.
I was born only a year before the album was released, so I figure that the simple fact that it still seems vital makes one of the greatest albums ever. EVER!!! EEEEEEEEEEEEEVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!
My God, it's still great after 20 years
I can't believe it's been 20 years since this masterpiece dropped. I was just 17 when I heard "Unsatisfied," which somehow summed up my state of mind perfectly. I bought the album as soon as I could find it, and was knocked out by all the great songs in addition to the one song for which I bought it.
The album certainly has its standouts, but played start to finish the whole thing packs a punch, even to this day. Later 'Mats album had more polish and consistency, but Let It Be is a chronical of drunken, youthful frustration, railing at the world:
"Seen your video/Your phony rock and roll..."
"I hate your answering machine..."
"Everthing you dream of is right in front of you/Liberty is a lie..."
If it isn't already in your collection, get it. Now.
