Customer Reviews of Less an Object
What a Time (From someone who was there)!!!! This is not so much of a review as it is a big thanks to all involved with getting this collection out. The Sleepers were an awesome band on the nights when we were on our game. I am somewhat biased, for obvious reasons, but The Sleepers were an extraordinary band in an extraordinary scene at an extraordinary time. Unfortunately, music fans of this day and age have no concept of what a scene like the Bay Area was like in the late 70's. With fewer and fewer live venues for bands to play and for fans to hear good contemporary music in the U.S. these days, I was just glad to be out and about and contributing to a scene like that in my musical career. Thanks, Nick Blakey, for the kind words and I hope everyone enjoys this set. Long live the memory of the Sleepers, especially the early 80's version!!!
Brilliant early SF punk rock
The Sleepers were it!!! Ricky Williams had a fantastic voice (check out his stuff with the Toiling Midgets on "Sea of Unrest" as well) and the band played heavy proto-punk, Stooges-style riffs -- particularly on the first five tracks (the original, legendary ep -- the later tracks actually are more in a Joy Division, post-punk vein). The early SF punk scene was simply incredible -- the Sleepers, Crime, Avengers, Negative Trend, Mutants, Dils, Nuns, Offs, etc. Great stuff.
Uncannily, creepily astounding.
The first five tracks on this disc are worth the price of the album. These tracks comprise the 1979 EP that takes you to the realm that is equal parts your own half-consciousness, the foggy, damp San Franscisco urban gloomsphere, and an acrid, sludgy soup that the Sleepers themselves bring to the recipe.
Side note: Luckily for all of us, V. Vale had the foresight to document The Sleepers and their contemporaries in SEARCH & DESTROY form 1977-9, the 2-volume reprint of which should still be in print as of this writing...
