Customer Reviews of Leonard Cohen I'm Your Man
Marvelous! I thought that Lian Lunson did a beautiful job marrying the glorious singing from the concert in Melbourne with the meliflous voice of Leonard Cohen. This is a great documentary on a great poet. Thank you Lian.
If the filmmaker had only searched as deeply as Leonard Cohen does in his songs--
I have followed Leonard Cohen's work since I bought my first vinyl of THE SONGS OF LEONARD COHEN back in 1968. Over the years I have consistently admired most of his albums and his covers for other performers. I own and love three of his poetry collections, and find his recent work particularly inspiring.

>Knowing the risks he has taken in his poetry, music and spiritual life, I was amazed that the director of this oddly irritating tribute (and the numbing concert on which it is based) garnered such praise from the press and from viewers.

>To my mind, only Rufus Wainwright and Beth Orton sang Cohen's songs clearly enough and unaffectedly enough to bring their richness to life. While Antony excels on his own albums, as does Linda Thompson, they seemed oddly out-of-place here And Martha Wainwright's 'very high-pitched timbre almost gave me chills.

>The actual documentary footage here is bare-bones, featuring some scattered childhood footage and some extended coverage of Cohen's two monastic sojourns. But the childhood footage repeats -- without apparent reason. The scattered archival footage from Cohen's early New York days lacks focus. There must be more substantial archival stuff available, and one wonders why the director did not incorporate it.

>The cinematography is often quite awkward, as several times the camera peers between mike stands at Wainwright's face as he sings "Hallelujah." Now and then, a showgirl appears, without rhyme or reason, wearing a low-cut dress against a red-background. Seemed self-conscious. I asked, "Why?"

>The film also ended as abruptly as it started. It lacked a coherent structure, and its odd narrative form was complicated by the out-of-focus, colored lights the director used for many of his segues. Why?

>In the same year Amy Berg produced the astonishing DELIVER US FROM EVIL I'm afraid the documentary bar has been set higher, and I'M YOUR MAN doesn't make it over the bar even though the songwriter does.

>The three stars are purely for Leonard Cohen, who has triumphed in most of his albums, poetry collections, earlier documentaries and more. The guy is an honest, good-humored genius who works hard for his money. And his 2003 CBS album,TEN NEW SONGS, is no less fascinating than SONGS OF LOVE AND HATE.

>Had the film been more thoughtfully produced (Mel Gibson was actually one of the producers) the director might not have needed the Edge and Bono to work so hard at praising Cohen. They might have told stories of their friendship instead.

>For those who disagree, I extend my respect. I may have missed something here, but I left the film in the same mental state as when I started. I have ultimate respect for Leonard Cohen and this disjointed film contributed little to my knowledge of his work, or deepened my respect for him.

>Buy remastered versions of his recordings. Buy a book of his poetry, but don't waste your money on this.
There is a crack in everything ...
... That's how the light gets in. From Cohen's great song "Anthem", the next to the last song on the DVD performed by Perla Batalla and Julie Christensen is the best lead in to the finale - "Tower of Song" performed by Cohen and U2. Bono is so good on this performance and his apperances throughout the DVD that you can almost get to like him! In fact, his appearances and self depricating manner are a far cry from his - at times -bombastic self promotion as the savior of the world's downtrodden. But, I digress...

>If you do not know who Leonard Cohen is or have never sampled his music, this is the DVD for you. At first listening, Cohen can turn you right off. But, Rufus Wainwright, his sister Martha and mother Kate McGarrigle make Cohen completely accessible. These are some of the best performances ever given - not just of Cohen, but EVER! "I'm Your Man" will give you goose bumps as performed by Nick Cave. Get this DVD. You'll love it.
