Customer Reviews of Legend: Carlo Maria Giulini [CD & DVD]
Giulini: A True Legend EMI has produced so many new classical lines in the past couple of years that it's hard to keep track of them all, but one that has flown surprisingly under the radar is the "Legend" series. These sets feature one CD and one DVD by some of EMI's leading artists of the past fifty years. The title that initially intrigued me was David Oistrakh's because it featured his previously out-of-print recording of the Beethoven Violin Concerto with conductor Andre Cluytens. Then after going through the lineup of initial "Legend" offerings, I discovered a few others that I felt were worth getting, and the Carlo Maria Giulini title was one of them. <

>The CD features the conductor's late 1950s recordings of Franck's Symphony in D minor and "Psyche et Eros" Poeme Symphonique, Bizet's "Jeux d'enfants" Suite, and Ravel's "Ma Mere l'oye" Suite, all with the incomparable Philharmonia Orchestra. These performances have been previously available -- both Francks featured on Giulini's title in the old "Artist Profile" series, and the Bizet recently appeared on his volume in the "Great Conductors of the Century" series (see my review). This was my first encounter with this account of the Ravel, but I believe it has had a prior issue as well. All of these recordings are captured in brilliant golden age stereo and have to be counted among the best performances of the works ever made. <

>The DVD contains two selections from "Carlo Maria Giulini" (EMI 4 90114 9 6/5) -- a 1968 performance of Verdi's "Les Vepres Siciliennes" Overture and a 1964 performance of Falla's "El Sombrero de Tres Picos" Suite No. 2, both filmed at Fairfield Hall in Croydon with the New Philharmonia Orchestra. These are priceless historical documents, especially for those of us too young to have witnessed the great players of the past in person. In all, this is a first rate tribute to a true legend.
