Customer Reviews of Laurie Records Story 2 Earnie Maresca Years
This Guy Just Won't Go Away For a one-hit wonder - Shout! Shout! (Knock Yourself Out) - a # 6 in 1962 with The Del Satins and Billy Mure & His Orchestra - Ernie Maresca's name sure seems to pop up with annoying regularity. Yes, he wrote several hits for others, as detailed in liner notes that only Ace Records can produce.
But in this compilation only tracks 11, 12, and 13 were hits for the artists concerned. That's three out of twenty-six. When do they stop trying to feed us his own performances which, for the most part, were dismal failures, as well as songs he wrote that never went anywhere for others?
Remember those ubiquitous 20 Collector's Records Of The 50's and 60's and 21 Country Rock & Love Songs Of The 50's & 60's from Laurie Records and the Continental Communications Corporation that seemed to be everywhere at the start of the CD era? Each presented numerous failed Ernie Maresca cuts along with others by artists and groups no one ever heard of [The Jeans, Carlo, The 5 Discs, Dino & The Diplomats, etc.]. But at least they mixed them in with some bona fide hits to help sell the item.
Now along comes Ace to continue that "tradition" with this collection. I mean, who the heck are The Brooklyn Boys, The Dernilles, The Four Graduates, The Harps, Hoagy Lands, The Traces, Jimmy Curtiss & The Regents, The Teardrops, Frank Lyndon, and Artie Chicago?? Does anyone outside their immediate families remember them? Ernie Maresca must have some huge influence still on the market.
Filling out an expensive 26-selection CD with this kind of junk only serves to take away from their other excellent productions, such as the Teen Beat and Golden Age Of American Rock 'N Roll series. Enough with Ernie Maresca.
