Customer Reviews of Laura Wilcox Music for Viola
heavily edited This CD must have been heavily edited.
I bought it last year and thought this new performer was a very accomplished one. However, motivated by the CD I went recently to a concert presented by the Bonk Festival in Tampa area where I live and was extremely dissapointed with the performance of Sergio Barroso's Viola Desnuda. Neither the wonderful sound nor technical mastery found on the CD was evident in the live performance given by Ms. Wilcox. Day and night!
It is very frustrating these days that "performers" can simulate high artistic levels with the aid of master editors. (In this case it seems to have been the composer himself).
One never knows.
Based on this experience I assume the other works on this CD went through the same grand editing process.
GORGEOUS VIOLA SOUNDS!!!
With Laura's command of her instrument, it is as though she holds an artist's paintbrush in her hand, rather than a large bow!
Impressive
A veritable tour de force by a new young virtuoso violist. One of the most beautiful and unique viola sound I have ever listened to, coupled with an absolute technical mastery of the instrument and a profound artistic understanding of the very different styles of the presented repertoire. Her rendering of the traditional Brahms and Schumann works are among the best ever recorded. The contemporary pieces undoubtedly in the hands of an expert.
Barroso's Viola Desnuda is a gem with all the ingredients to become soon regular repertoire among viola virtuosos. Cage's selected Freeman Etudes (transcribed by Barroso and Wilcox) sounds to me more powerfull, rich and interesting than in its original violin setting. I'm sure Cage would have loved them. Patch's Samhain for viola and piano a charming surrealist work.
Excellent pianists (Poulin and Clarke). Wonderfully recorded in Montreal by SNE. Bravo!
