Arnolds BEST!!!
I saw this movie in a movie store a long time ago, and I have never even heard of it, so curious (because I love all the movies Arnold is in) I rented it, and it honestly is the BEST! It has a lot of humor and action, and the story line is great, it may seem like a cheap story line, but this film is one of the best, I don't see why it wasn't a hit in theatres, I think it is just that they didn't advertise it much, but honestly if you want to see Arnold at his best, BUY THIS FILM, I could never get sick of this movie, it is Brilliant. I have bought my own DVD, and I have been showing it to my friends, and everyone that I know has agreed that it is his best, its just that no one has seen it, so trust me, watch this movie

They Had It, and Then They Lost It
"Last Action Hero" is made by people who love movies, warts and all. It begins and ends with the filmmakers expressing their undying love for the escapsim and magic that movies can bring to audiences, and also pokes fun at all of Hollywood's cliches and standards with a warm smile. But does the concept hold up? More on that later.

>Danny (Austin O'Brien) is a wiseass kid who knows everything there is to know about movies. His favorite action hero is Jack Slater, played by Arnoled Schwarzenegger. The fourth installment of this very-90s adventure series is coming to theatres, and Danny eagerly awaits its release. When the projectionist of a beatdown theatre not only offers Danny a sneak preview, but also gives him a magical ticket from Houdini, things get really interesting.

>Suddenly, a stick of dynamite appears, and Danny is thrust into the world of Jack Slater. This is where the movie really takes off. Slater pulls off ridiculously impossible stunts, spurts out corny one-liners, listens to poorly-placed music, confronts sterotypical bad guys, and tackles one of the dumbest criminal plots to ever grace the cinema. The twist is that Danny's along for the ride inside the movie, and counterpoints the hyper-reality that Jack Slater's Los Angeles inhabits. This is all played as straight-faced as possible, and draws huge laughs. I can't name every single movie satire in this action comedy, because the entire world of Jack Slater is a satire. It's all laughs and a lot of fun.

>After the henchman (or, "lackey") Benedict catches onto what's going on, he exposes the magical ticket's powers to enter the REAL New York City that Danny lives in. This is where the movie becomes desperate, and not much fun. The conflicts that Jack Slater must face in the real world, versus the life which he thought was his own, is truly riveting. But what "Last Action Hero" does wrong is go back to its action/adventure roots while in real New York, with an anti-climatic showdown between Jack Slater and Benedict.

>The point of the movie is lost, because the sensationalism of Hollywood's cinema doesn't belong in the grim neighborhood of New York City. The ideas don't mesh. The movie also becomes too 'magical', as themes like believing in your heroes and fate are poorly-placed. The movie just falls apart, and loses its fun. Sometimes, tackling different themes works, but "Last Action Hero" would've stayed as a action comedy that lived and died by its Hollywood roots. "Last Action Hero" is a movie that feels like two different movies that make a coherent, but anti-climactic mosaic. It just falls apart.

>I would normally give this a 3-star rating, but if this movie had opener poorly and ended with a strong bang, then I would forgive its shortcomings. But "Last Action Hero" builds on great things and then disappoints us, which is a worse offender.
