Customer Reviews of LapLink PCmover 4.0
solid for me Went from a Win98 machine to a Win XP machine on the same home network. <
> <
>Downloaded and installed Laplink PCMover on both machines. <
> <
>Had 6 GB of hard drive of old machine. PCMover moved it in 6 hours. Programs moved included MSword, excel, powerpoint, outlook express, Opera, Mozilla Firefox, Photoshop, Xnews, Norton Ghost, AntiVir Guard. It moved nearly all my preferences and bookmarks for those programs so they all came up working as soon as the LAN-based transfer was complete. <
> <
>I went from C: drive to C: drive only so it wasn't as complex as some reviewers who had problems with multiple partitions. <
> <
>Downsides: online purchase through Element 5 took 2 hours for the purchase to OK my credit card so I could download the program and get started. <
> <
>Outlook Express did not migrate with all my configured mail accounts over so I had to set up the mail accounts for some of my servers. All my local folders did migrate, so all my saved emails were transferred to the new machine. <
> <
>Outlook did not migrate correctly. Will have to install by hand to move my contacts and calendar over. May have been user error though: It's possible I accidentally deleted a registry entry which caused this software to not migrate correctly -- I was in regedit cleaning out some McAfee entries before I ever tried Outlook. <

>Other than that, it was a pretty straightforward move of software. Glad to have avoided the time and trouble it would have taken to install those packages on my new PC and transfer all my documents.
you can't reuse it
This program is too simplistic. If you miss, you will pay again because this is a one-time transfer and you can't reuse it to move a new Windows installation. If you want to transfer *some* files or applications to another computer, forget it. You will have much less trouble with a floppy disk and the original installation files. The job will definitely be quicker.
Customer be ware!
This software is best (kindly) described as a customer beware item.

>First, there is an advertised rebate - but that "rebate" applies only if you purchase other software from the same company. This is a misuse of the word rebate and is best described as false advertising. Customer service's response to this is "Tough luck stupid." Yes, stupid for believing that English would be used properly by a software company.

<
>Second, the software reports that you can move as often as you want - not so. You can move ONLY from ONE machine. If you buy this product, as I did, to consolidate files from my office and home machines to a single new laptop - again the tough luck line. It is honestly described as a single use product. If moving once is your goal, there are other, less expensive ways to do that. My recommendation is to steer clear.

>BTW I used the previous product, inlettimover. That worked as advertised. So the company has been taken over by cleaver lawyer types who hide their deception in fine print (or in the case of the "rebate" inside the box where you cannot see it until after you have purchased the product).
