Customer Reviews of Lamenti Barochi, Vol. 3
Inexpensive quality performances of Baroque laments This is the third in a series of baroque lament cd's by Naxos. They have the usual Naxos quality performances.
The first track is the Lament of Ariadne by Monteverdi. This is very much an operatic piece with a quiet instrumental accompaniment to a highly operatic vocal solo. The text is a lament of the Cretan princess seemingly abandoned by her lover.
The second is an interesting "mad woman" lament with the madness conveyed through "hysterical" laughter. While interesting in its own right as a lament, it is more interesting as an early example of madness in music.
The third lament, written by a woman, is based on a historical event. This is a solid piece of Baroque music but I personally prefer the cuts on the first volume of the laments.
The composer of the next piece served as musician in a Jesuit college. The subject of the lament of Mary Queen of Scots. This piece is the most dramatic of the album but with a decidedly religious sound
The next piece is a lament of the Holy Mother, a wonderful lenten piece with which I was not previously acquainted. The instrumental accompaniment is subdued, leaving the emphasis to the text which is well performed.
The final lament is for the Queen of Sweden. Again, this is a piece from a baroque opera. It aptly shows why baroque opera should be performed with more frequency - any opera lover should be entralled.
Delicious and dramatic!
I have enjoyed listening to this CD. The voices and interpretations are rich and dramatic. I'm a newcomer to this repertoire, having been familiar only with the first selection, but I would love to have the other volumes as well. I have a couple of other Naxos early music CD's, and intend to buy more- the quality is excellent and the price unbeatable!
