Customer Reviews of Lady in the Water (Widescreen Edition)
People seem to have lost the ability to enjoy simple movies. My Mom and I watched this when it came out on dvd. Upon completing the movie, I turned to mom and said I wished these were the kind of bedtime stories she had been told. It is sad when people loss that child in them and cannot see the wonder. In my mind this was one of Shyamalans' best movies. We all need to be reminded to come together for the aid of others. I think Shyamalan didn't really get the credit he deserved. <
>In a world of violence and hate, this was a very refreshing movie.
Not horror; not a thriller, really; just artistic, eccentric, magical.
As I am discovering with Shyamalan, his mind is very unique and eccentric. In ordinary settings, he introduces vastly interesting and extraordinary events or abilities happening to ordinary folk. This film is much like a humorous character study, at times, giving you a glimpse into the quirky lives of residents in an apartment building. What I love about the film is that, when a fantastic myth comes to life in their midst, their eccentric or perfectly ordinary traits and habits are key to helping the Lady in the Water as well as all mankind. In that sense, it is inspirational to each ordinary individual watching. Your greatest talent might be pouring concrete that won't ever crack. Big deal, you say? Well, that unbreakable concrete may just be keeping the dreaded dirt ogre from raising up and devouring the city! Watch the DVD extras. After watching this one and "Unbreakable," I am now a fan of this director.
It wasn't a bad movie...
..but it's the kind of movie you would only see once. The problem with making movies that have a twist at the end is that their repeat value is extremely low. This is no exception. By M. Night Shamalyan, this movie delivers a good story, but, it begins to lose it's luster towards the end. Still, it's an innovative story, just not one I'd see several times. The only two movies he's made that I own are "Signs" and "The Sixth Sense". That's because the cast is great and their performance is wonderful and actually keeps you in the moment. I could go on about these two movies, but in all fairness, I'm reviewing "Lady in the Water". Paul Giamati is a good actor. But all the other actors, didn't seem to pull their weight. Bryce Howard is gorgeous, and her lines are very minimal, so it wouldn't be fair to compare her with the main character.

>Again, it's not a bad movie, just a movie to rent or view on cable.
