Customer Reviews of LaCie d2 16x DVD+\-RW DL External Firewire and USB 2.0 (300983)
Beware of Lemons from LaCie As a tech, I've been a loyal customer of LaCie for replacement drives. They were highly rated and I liked their service. So at the end of 2004, when I needed a DVD burner, I bought the internal version of this one, which got high ratings. With very light use, the drive worked fine for about six months. Then it started reporting errors such as "the connection is not stable" and refusing to burn disks. As a tech, I tried to troubleshoot the problem myself. I did some research on line and installed all the latest updates to no avail. I tried the drive on several Macs, in several drive enclosures and tried installing it internally. <

>By the time I gave up and called LaCie, I had just passed out of my one-year warrantee. For some reason, the tech told me that based on my serial number, I had gotten in just in time to have my warrantee honored. First, LaCie blamed the disks, which didn't make sense, since this "premium" drive was rejecting numerous brands. At their advice, I spent money on TDK disks and managed to burn a couple of DVDs before the drive went completely South. <

>It refused to burn anything and misreported the types of disks I put in -- such as reporting that it had a blank CD-R when I had put in a TDK DVD. That phase ended very quickly and the drive entered its current useless state. It now crashes any app, such as iTunes, Disk Utility or Toast, that looks for a burner. After I wasted even more of my time, LaCie decided that they were not going to service the drive after all because I first called after the warrantee ran out. <

>I understand that a company may need to draw the line when a call comes after the warrantee technically runs out. But they told me at first that they would take care of it, greatly wasting my time. And their tech didn't call back when he said he would. And it peeves me to no end that I spent good money on a product that did so little work before it up and died. I probably burned between 20 and 30 disks total with this drive before it became a total failure. That's about $5 per disk burned. Now, time and money wasted, I am moving on to another brand. Beware of LaCie's lemons. <

Worked as expected
So far so good, no problems (yet), the firewire helped a lot as i was able to boot the G4s from the external drive to upgrade all 23 macs to OSX 10.4.3
Excellent drive
This DVD drive did everything that it promised! A good purchase that won't disappoint.
