Customer Reviews of La Mer / Nocturnes (Dts)
Debussy, Martinon & DTS: Scintillating, sound & music Almost all current dvd players can play DTS encoded discs, since this movie sound standard is fairly ubiquitous. Check your own particular dvd player's book, since if you can play DTS movie soundtracks, you have the necessary decoding chip for this sound-only disc. This DTS feature allows many people to experience equally high quality sound, since they already have the hardware sufficient to the DTS task. The better your home theater setup, of course, the better your results. Or, as the web experienced may say: your mileage may vary. In any case, the producers of this DTS sound-only disc have gotten licensed access to those old, original quadraphonic master tapes from EMI. Working up from the true source tracks, the production team has carefully and most effectively transferred all the music on the master tracks to the standardized DTS 5.1 format. Now this amazing and deservedly-well-praised performance by French conductor Jean Martinon and the French National Radio Orchestra gets something like the incredible sound that it actually merits. That is, the orchestra and the hall are re-created in surround sound ambiance and multi-channel clarity and sonic accuracy. If these performances weren't so incredibly good, a consensus of quality opinions having flooded over the years from critics who otherwise delight in being able to individually disagree, the improvement in sound would count for very little. But given the absolutely classic nature of these French performances of that archetypally French composer (Debussy), you can rejoice every time you put the disc in your player. Yes, the orchestral waves of climactic sound let the power and mystery of the sea right into your own listening space. But repeated hearings only get you deeper into the orchestra, where you find yourself noticing and admiring specific instruments, particularly woodwinds. The mystery of the oceans is dynamic, and their powers fearsome, so long as planet earth survives, and so long as we survive with it. Something similar might be argued for Debussy's La Mer, where the eternal mystery is his music, inseparable from his magical gifts of orchestration. Although the musical style has been dubbed "impressionistic," there is nothing vague, or over-generalized, or tentative ... about Debussy's ability to write a specific line for each player. Even when some orchestral group is allowed to surge up, into massed sound effects, you will usually find the specific means of Debussy's method still present, in other instruments, and also in his intuitive sense of form and of harmony. From top to bottom, the French National Radio Orchestra win unmixed admiration in every department. These performances were recorded decades ago, and probably the orchestra has changed membership enough that you could credibly argue it is now a completely different orchestra. Nevertheless, here you have the redoubtable Jean Martinon, and this marvelous French band, to show you whenever you would like, the whole Debussy miracle of La Mer and of the three Nocturnes. As if this were not good enough news, it is also true that the rest of the recordings of the complete Debussy orchestral music are similarly available in this DTS format. Get this disc, then save up your spending allowances for each of the others. Not least you will be able to assess how your home theater system handles music of big, colorful dimensions, as well as explosions and car crashes. State of the art sound. Great performances. Highly recommended.
