The Essential Quality of Eastern Liturgy This music may not quite flow with the grace and sophistication of the Tchaikovsky or Rachmaninoff versions which resonate with romanticism. This music is founded more deeply within the ancient character of the liturgy itself. The singing of the bass gives one the sense of being rooted in the earth to which the early congregates were inexorably connected. Everything flows up from that quality to a high exaltation that remains integrated top to bottom in the body of the liturgy - soaring, but not a hint of romantic detachment. The spirit of this music is rock solid. To my mind it is more authentic than any other recorded Eastern liturgical music with which I am familiar.
