Customer Reviews of La Crosse WS-2210 Professional Wireless Weather Station
Simple and Powerful I bought this as a gift for my Dad and so far I'd have to say that this appears to be a very decent weather station. I only rank as 4 stars because 5 stars would mean that it is perfect with no room for improvement. There are few items on the market that don't need any improvements, and this weather station could use one or two minior improvements; but more on that later. <

>First off let me explain that I am relatively new to digital wireless weather stations, so my frame of reference for comparison is limited. The only other such device that I have seen and played around with was an Orgeon Scientific wireless rain gauge. I can easily attest that this device seems to be much more powerful than that. As such, allow me to explain a couple of key facts to remember before purchasing this device. <

>First, it is important to understand that this weather station is digital and wireless and will work up with it's various sensors as much as 330 feet away from the base station. The sensors work on a 3 minute scan frequency meaning that the sensors only send updated information to the indoor base station every 3 minutes. This means that the data displayed on the base unit is not instantaneous data. It is not going to show wind speed and wind direction the instant it happens. Rather, it seems to take an average of what the wind has done in the last 3 minutes and then sends that information to the base station. Some people may find this annoying, but it doesn't seem that big of a deal to me. This delay is built into all of the sensors so it holds true for the temperatures, humidity, and barometric readings as well. If this is a problem for you then do not buy this unit. <

>Set up was a breeze (no pun intended) and the included instruction manual seemed well written and easy to follow. Again, you will want to read through the manual completely before you get started to familiarize yourself with all of the steps. This will ensure a trouble free setup proceedure. However, parts of the manual seemed a bit odd in sentence structure and syntax and led me to believe that the instructions were interpreted from a different language. But there was nothing that you couldn't make sense of what it was saying. <

>By and far, the most difficult and timely part of setting up this weather station is the permanent mounting of the outdoor sensors. Once you have acquired all the necessary tools and materials needed to install everything, you can pretty much figure on a minimum 2 hours to properly mount everything. It might take longer if you're not handy with tools. Of course, there are no wires to run, but you do have to take care for example that the rain gauge is level and that all outdoor sensors are pointing to true south. All necessary screws and brackets are included for install, but the point I'm trying to make is that you will have to spend some time to determine the best locations for each sensor and then take care to install them securely and level and pointing in the right direction to make sure they work properly. And don't let me scare you about tools and materials. All we used was a cordless drill, a screw driver, adjustable pliers, a hammer and 4 nails, and some levels. Materials needed not included was an aluminum pole for the mast for the wind meter and a wooden board to serve as a base for the rain gauge. <

>We got ours going with no problems. If I find any problems with it after we've used it for awhile I will try to modify this report and let you know. But for now, everything seems to be working exactly as described. The overall quality of the components seems sturdy and the only thing that is missing that it needs is a way to adjust the contrast on the base station's LCD screen. If it is there, I can't seem to locate it. It could use with some adjustment to see better in darker lighting conditions. Also, it would've been nice for them to include the AA batteries needed for the base station and the indoor temperature sensor. You will need 6 AA batteries (not included) to get the station up and running. The solar rechargeable batteries in the outside sensors are provided and already installed in the sensors. Other than that, so far I have found this to be a reliable and fun weather station so far and it seems to be very accurate. It would be nice if they could take out the 3 minute delay on data updates, but I'm not sure if that is possible.
