Customer Reviews of La Cantina
La Cantina This is the first time I had heard this singer, and I have to say that I was and am impressed with her strong and smooth voice. Her songs are authentic and sung wonderfully. She has a beautiful voice. I would definately buy another one of her CD's.
Inattention
I love the music, I love the style, I love her voice...but not really thinking, I didn't anticipate an entire album of bar songs...foolish me.

>I will buy more Lila Downs albums, just pay more attention to the title instead of just listening to the NPR interview and review.

Classics with a Twist
Or rather, twisted classics.... This album features traditional songs, which Lila Downs interprets in her unique and interesting way (como siempre). Plus she treats the listener to some of her own work, such as "La Cumbia del Mole," which is indeed dark and rich, with a waft of a secret ingredient. Lila Downs is an incredibe talent and this is really a five star album but I ratcheted it down a notch, due the fact that while I enjoy these unusual renditions, I sometimes wish she would pull back just a bit. I feel the "trying too hard" syndrome referred to by another reviewer is displayed in this album as well. Even though I realize great artists take risks, I'm always tempted to cherry pick through her CD's for the songs that are more "listenable." (I guess that's what IPods are for.) I would most definitely recommend this well-crafted CD to fans and non fans alike.
