Customer Reviews of LITE-ON IT CORPORATION LVW5045 DVD /hdd Recorder
Excellent device! This Lite On DVD/HDD recorder is a heaven sent purchase that I was looking for. Worked fine on all my needs!!! Just one little glitch, the display panel could be a bit brighter. But other than this little display the rest is wonderful!
Great DVD Recorder
We've been using the LVW5045 DVD/hdd recorder for about a month now and are extremely pleased with it. We bought this to take advantage of the timeshift feature (like TIVO) without having to pay a monthly fee and the DVD recording feature and the region-free capability.

>Pros: The price was great.
<
>It's easy to set up.

<
>The recording quality is great. We've been recording tv shows for the kids and my husband at EP to fit several on a DVD. The quality even at that speed is way better than a VHS tape.

>The timeshift feature is great. It allows you to pause live tv for up to 3 hours. There are a few things to get used to with timeshifting. It will only work for 3 hours so watch out with football games. My husband missed the end of the Super Bowl! If you timeshift something you have to watch it then or it will go away. It's not the same as recording something to the hard drive. We were timeshifting shows and then putting the kids to bed and coming back to watch later. Ended up staying up way too late. We have since found it easier to just record the shows to the hard drive. You can start watching the show while it is still recording. But if you don't want to stay up, you can catch the end another time.

>Ease of recording is fabulous. We used to record onto VHS a lot, and I didn't find it too much of a pain to set the recorder and pop in a tape, but my husband could never be bothered. Recording to the hard drive is so easy my husband does it all the time now, and I would find it extremely difficult to go back to recording onto tapes. It's so much easier not to mess with the tapes, trying to figure out if you still have enough room, making sure the tape is cued to the right position and the kids haven't rewound part way through the last show. We find that we tend to record more now. For example, we might record the end of a show and watch it the next day. Never would have bothered with VHS for that.

<
>Use the pause button: If you are watching while you are recording it's easy to take out commercials by hitting the pause button. If you hit the stop button and start again, you'll end up with separate programs on the hard drive that you'll have to merge together again.

<
>Copying from the hard drive to a dvd is also very easy. My 8-year-old son figured out how to do it by just looking at the remote. It takes a while to record from the hard drive to a disc. It's probably about 2 minutes to download an hour-long show onto a disc from the hard drive. It seems like a long time, but we've never compared that to other machines. For all we know, that might be considered fast.

>The "source" button is great for us, because we get tv through satellite and local channels through an antenna. The source button lets you toggle through the different input sources making it easier to switch from satellite to antenna.

<
>Region-free. We have several European DVD's that you can't play on normal US machines. It was very easy to make this one region-free. (Instructions can be found through a google search online.) You hit the "set up" button on the remote. Highlight the "exit" box that looks like someone leaving through a door. Just highlight the box, don't actually exit by hitting the "enter" button once you've highlighted the exit box. While the box is highlighted, enter the numbers 2,9,6,0 slowly. You'll get region code options. Select region-free and you're done.

>Naming recordings and assigning thumbnail images are quite easy and not too cumbersome. Using the pause button and then setting the thumbnail works well.

>Cons:
<
>We have very few complaints about the machine. These few little things are what keep us from giving it 5 stars.

>You have to be careful deleting something from the hard drive or you might end up deleting everything from the hard drive. It was our own fault. Since the recorder was so easy to set up, we didn't bother reading all the instructions before recording and deleting using on-screen commands and what seemed to make sense. DO NOT select a program from the hard drive and then hit the "Tools" button and then select "delete." That will delete the entire hard drive. To safely delete something you have to select a program to play and then hit the "edit" button and then scroll down the options to delete it. Works great once you do it right!

<
>The on-screen commands are sometimes difficult to read until you select them and the background changes color. You get used to this quickly.

>It would be very nice if it were easier to delete commercials from within a program that's already been recorded. This is now a cumbersome task. Imagine only one commercial break in a program. You'd have to split the program at the start of the commercial break, split again at the end of the break. This would create three separate programs on the hard drive. Then you'd have to merge the two you wanted to keep, making sure you didn't accidentally merge the commercial break back in. Of course, this is even more of a hassle with more commercial breaks. After a while it was obvious it was just easier to fast forward through the commercials. (You can fast forward at 2x, 4x, 8x, and 16x speed. Every time you hit the ff button it goes up to the next level or starts over again at 2x. There is a slight delay (about a second or so) from hitting the button to the speed change registering on the screen.) It would have been great if you could selectively delete frames from a program. If you are heavily into editing, this would quickly become a giant pain.
