Boasting a whopping 18 subgames scattered throughout an intricate realm of islands, undersea worlds, deserts, and space, LEGO Island 2 focuses more on adventure and less on construction than previous LEGO titles. Players assume the identity of renaissance dude Pepper; pizza delivery, deep-sea diving, astronaut training, and jousting are just a handful of the well-rendered experiences that await adventurers. The arrow keys get quite a workout as the game progresses, as they control everything from speedboats to parachutes to tyrannosaurs as Pepper changes modes of transport. Pepper churns through this world fending off the Brickster's henchmen robots, collecting pages of a "constructopedia," and mastering various challenges in order to progress. Subgames must be completed in a sequence, and can then be re-accessed from Pepper's house. Players must work to build Pepper's pad, find the subgames, and chat with other characters for clues about how to move through this LEGO landscape. Players who want it all handed to them on one clickable screen will be frustrated: LEGO wants you to work for your pleasure, and get some calluses on those fingertips.
The charm of this impressive Windows-only program lies in the attention paid to detail, dialogue, and creative fun. The undersea game doesn't just have fish--it has narwhals and rowdy pirate skeletons growling curses. A knight straight out of Monty Python and the Holy Grail intones "Nay, nay, nay, one-who's-name-is-a-spice" when Pepper asks for help. Creators put a skateboard park on the island just for the heck of it. LEGO Island 2 provides both great gameplay and ample opportunity to freestyle. Also, the fluid detail of this program belies the chunky origins of LEGO life as we know it.
That detail comes with a price: it takes some time to load the subgames and scene changes even if your system meets the game's requirements. If LEGO Island 2 were one of Pepper's pizzas, it'd be an ultra mega deluxe, piled high with mummies, pterodactyls, and renegade robots. It'd also take a longer time to bake than your plain cheese, but the wait would be worth it. (Ages 6 to 99) --Anne Erickson

Customer Reviews of LEGO Island 2
It don't work! Now, I realise that computers are different from PC to PC. But mine exceeds the requirements. I have WIN98SE. I'm very good with computers. Lego Island Xtreme works perfectly. Lego Racers 2 locks up on occation, but works good most of the time. But this thing won't even load. The screen starts to go black and then there's an error, drop to desktop. Annoying! Gonna try it with another machine soon. But I'm glad I didn't pay much for this because somebody gets whatever money I paid (not amazon, got it elsewhere) and I get a game that doesn't work. Very flawed series on the programming side. Buyer beware of products from Lego. Read user comments before you buy.
Not compatible
Bought this for my son as a Christmas gift. We had an older system that ran Windows 95/98. It ran, but took FOREVER to load the different themes. We bought a brand new system with Windows XP and now it won't run Lego Island 2 at all! We tried patches and checked the Electronic Arts website for troubleshooting with XP. My husband has his Master's degree in computers and he couldn't get it to run! Don't buy it if you have a new system with Windows XP. This game is not compatible.
The Learning Co and Humongous software run perfect with XP.
Challenging and cool
First of all you start the game as Pepper, a pizza delivering dude with the food. But as soon as you give a pizza order to the evil Brickster, he escapes. While exploring lots of different islands this game offers challenging sub-games and fun adventures. The last level can be very frustrating because it freezes and thats why I gave it 4 stars but the whole game is just plain fun. You can ride in the skatepark and play any sub-game that you have already won. There are tons of ways to explore, by dinosaur , by helicopter, and more! To sum it all up, Lego Island 2 is a great game except for it takes to long to load but the gameplay is beutiful with sharp grafics.
