Customer Reviews of Krull
KRULL Essentially a good damsel in distress movie. While Freddie Jones, Alun Armstrong, Lysette Anthony, Francesca Annis & Liam Neeson (possibly in his first role!) are recognizable, you probably won't recognize the others. Although you might recognize Ken Marshall from his roles in Star Trek Deep Space Nine.
The Plot: On the planet Krull, Prince Colwyn is coming to meet his bride Princess Lyssa. Their union will unite their two families who are feuding. But before the wedding can end, The Beast's drone-like emissaries crash the ceremony, kill everyone and snatch Lyssa.
The Beast is the loathsome tyrant of Krull.
In the wreckage that once was Lyssa's father's castle, everyone is lying dead (except Colwyn) a mysterious figure enters, he is Ynyr (Freddie Jones). He tends to Colwyn's wounds and when he awakens Ynyr tells him what happened, Colwyn is heartbroken at losing his father, and would seemingly wallow in self-pity. Ynyr is disgusted "I came to meet a king, instead I find a boy" he turns to leave. But Colwyn calls after him "Lyssa?".
Ynyr explains that she has been taken to the Beast's castle, which disappears and reappears in a new location every day. There is really no telling where it is. But first they must retrieve the enigmatic "glaive" a weapon that Colwyn thought was just a myth.
The journey to get the glaive, may make people scoff, it looks so simple! Or maybe Colwyn just makes is look easy, he can appparently skillfully scale dramatic cliffs, clad in only his tight fitting prince outfit. Impressive! But the music during this section is really stunning (I wish there were a soundtrack available) It was composed by the legendary James Horner.
After getting the glaive, the two begin their uncertain journey. They are first seeking to consult a wise man, who's an old friend of Ynyr's, to find where exactly the Beast's castle is. On the way they join up with an assortment of characters. First a humorous magician. Then a band of escaped convicts, that first mean to rob Colwyn. The blind wise-man and his young boy assistant. Finally an very tall Cyclops-like figure, who has been following them from the beginning. His people were promised by the Beast that if they sacrificed an eye, they would be allowed to view the future, but now the only future they can see is the day of their death.
Meanwhile back at the Beast's castle, Lyssa is being menaced by the Beast. He can take any attractive form he wants. but Lyssa can help but notice aside from being a heartless brute, he's also repulsively hideous. He wants to make her his queen. And she spends her time avoiding him, trying to find a way out, and praying for Colwyn to hurry up.
During the last legs of their journey. Ynyr meets with his old bride. Now known as the Widow of the web (a beautiful Francesca Annis) She is condemned to live in the hub of a huge web, guarded by a like-wise enormous spider. In really a touching moment, Ynyr is able to make peace with his past.
Despite some problems, it REALLY IS an interesting film. (that is deserving of more than 2 stars, seesh!) It has a pretty good script, that isn't dry, with some witty lines. The characters are casted well. Everyone is likeable and believable. The Italian filmed locations are gorgeous, and the music is lovely. Deserves 41/2 stars at least.
I wouldn't judge it as "campy" although I think the cover art could've been better, but I guess "never judge a movie by it's cover" :-)
MOST TRIUMPHANT!!!!!
Enough to bring a grown man to tears. There should be a rating of ten stars because I would give Krull fifty. This movie conquers every fantasy movie ever! One must look past the acting, past the so-called basic plot (which in my opinion is why it's called fantasy) and see this movie as what it is: beautiful, epic, and how a part of you wants this to be true. Impossibilities aside, lets look at what cunstructs this movie to be the masterpiece that it is. First, the music, inspiring and tranquil are just two of its characteristics. James Horner is in his prime (Not that (stuff) from Titanic he whipped up in five minutes). Supposedly he was extremely ill when he wrote Krull's score, fortunately the best things arise from the worst times. I own the complete soundtrack (90+ minutes)to Krull and highly recommend it to anyone who is currently breathing. And for those of you who for some reason or other watch movies on mute, then watch it for the amazing scenery: huge mountains, georgous valleys, and gnarly castles. Also watch for a super early Liam Neeson as Kegan (with a massive axe). The DVD offers a plethora of features (Okay Terminator 2 has far more) such as what I call "super wide screen" (16:9 or 2.35:1), and superior picture compared to the VHS. And what about the ever attractive Lyssette Anthony as Lyssa (inventive?). Well, evil loses once again and the world of Krull is safe. Okay, rest your eyes.
Retro Fantasy Classic
This movie is one I grew up on in the 80's. I was pleased to find it on DVD, It is worth owning just for memories of retro special effects and just basic escapism.
