Customer Reviews of King of the Nordic Twilight
Good, but nothing more! After "Dawn of victory" (Rhapsody)my exptectations for Luca Turillis side project rose to enormest hights. But King of the Nordic Twilight is an avrage album. Its has some good songs but it alsow has many weak songs. The good songs - "Legend of steel", "Ancient Forest of Elves", "Kings of the Nordic Twilight" The bad songs - "Black Dragon", "Lord of the Winter Snow", "Where Heroes Lie", "Warrior's Pride" The music reminds of Rhapsody, but the singer is not as good. But one thing is incredibal on "King of the...", they have a female vocal from Iceland, and she has a voice that is damn GOOOD and the Tow songs with her is very original and exiting.
What a glorious Rhapsody album!
Sure there's loads of cheese and mythic imagery and D&D-esque lyrical content. I ask, what did you expect? You most likely wouldn't be looking at this review if you didn't know what you were getting yourself into. With that said, onto the review:
This might possibly be the best album Rhapsody's ever recorded (not unlike Tobias Sammet's Avantasia, eh?)! Okay, just kidding, you know by now this is the first solo effort from Luca Turilli, main man and chief egoist of Rhapsody, they of the Symphonic Epic Hollywood Metal! Luca's grandiose nature and stylings aside, this is a phenomenal record! Less bombastically orchestrated than the typical Rhapsody release, this album shreds from beginning to end. I mean, I dare you, double-DOG dare you to sit still through tracks like "Legend of Steel," "Lord of the Winter Storm" and "The Ancient Forest of Elves." They're infectious; catchy, extremely melodic, powerful and guitariffic. Plus they have the added benefit of also featuring on the bass guitar, power metal legend and ofttimes Rhapsody producer Sascha Paeth. Of course, the album is not without it's fast-forward tracks (primarily the agonizingly syrupy "Princess Aurora"), but they barely contain the momentum.
Like many modern epic power metal albums, "King..." works best when played all the way through so as to allow the music and story to unfold and develop. I'm always amazed at these musicians who are able to tell a story, I mean really tell a story, simply with the way the music progresses throughout an album. It's incredible. And Luca's one of the best at this highly-skilled craft. It's almost as if given his total control over a solo project, he's able to just explode and release a barnburner of a record. (Not that Rhapsody albums don't rock, but you know what I mean.)
And like many a 4 or 5-star power metal disc before it, Luca climaxes in grand fashion, closing with the epic 11+ minute "Kings of the Nordic Twilight." And close it does! Beginning with a gorgeous piano intro, it doesn't waste much time before launching into EXACTLY the kind of rocking, grand, epic metal anthem you'd expect. This would absolutely something to witness in a live setting, let me tell you. Traveling rapidly through section after section, Luca spins an impressive tale within the confines of only the closer, bringing to mind other bands' stellar efforts, songs like "Halloween" and "Keeper of the "Seven Keys" by Helloween, "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Iron Maiden, "Elizabeth" by Kamelot, and of course "Gargoyles..." by Luca's 'other' band, Rhapsody.
All in all, an amazing record, all the more amazing because Luca as an artist is responsible (primarily) for so much good music (once you count Rhapsody as well). This is well worth both your money and time. Get it now!
Very good indeed
This allbum does indeed remind you a lot about rhapsody, but the symphonic elements aren't as apparent in the mix as in Rhapsody's. This album has the usual sing along choruses and all that. All in all, this album does partly sound like Rhapsody with hints of Nightwish (when Rannveig sings Princess Aurora), elsewise like Helloween, (Olaf Hayer being german explains that) but most of all it is Rhapsodyish (there's only one blues-style solo - Sascha Paeth plays in the intro of Where Heroes Lie).
My favourite epic track is on this CD. Kings of the Nordic Twilight starts with soft piano , then goes into this choir accompanied with guitars, before moving into this cheerful folkish theme. And that's before Olaf has sung one note....
This epic is so much better than Prophet of the last eclipse which gets a little messy I think.
Other good tracks are Legend of Steel (infectious main theme...) , Black Dragon, Princess Aurora. All songs are good, though I tend to skip the intro(1)/interlude(7)
Also look out for the unlisted track 11 .. Rannveig singing an traditional nordic lullaby in Icelandic.
