Customer Reviews of Kickboxer [Region 2]
VanDamme's Best I have been waiting for a long time for this movie to come out on DVD. I think it is VanDamme's best! Tung-Po is the best villian in all of his movies. He has made many sleepers but this is one not to miss. Great man made action!
Surprisingly good because it keeps things simple; a "B-"
I just watched this again recently and was actually quite glad I did because it was better than I remembered it being. The movie actually succeeds *because* of its simple plot. Helping the film also is the cheesy (but still cool) 80's music, one mean villain in Tong Po (who is, for a film like this, quite masterfully characterized), and a few moments of true tension and emotion. My knocks against the film - Xian Chow has one too many moments of silliness and the story tries to do too much toward the end in terms of attempting to raise the stakes; still, 'Kickboxer' is worth a look as a Saturday afternoon action flick when you consider that it has relatively humble intentions and goes out and achieves it in a humble way.
Van Dumb
I thought this movie sucked for one reason: It's called kickboxer but, lo and behold, there's no kickboxing in it!!!! I practice martial arts and can say with certainty that Jean Claude was doing a hybrid of Shotokan karate (which he has a black belt in in real life), hapkido or another korean style that uses high flashy kicks, and some form of tai chi he was using while doing all the slow-movement scenes. The only muay Thai done in the movie was done by Tong Po, Van Damme was training with a muay Thai teacher but must have been watching karate tapes at night in his hut or not paying much attention in his lessons. As with his other movies, his Eurotrash accent and horrific acting make this film almost painful to watch, and the only good parts in the whole movie were the ones showing that cute Thai chick who was the teacher's niece.
