Customer Reviews of Keeping Up Appearances: I'm Often Mistaken for Aristocracy
A great Britcom! Poor Hyacinth Bucket (played by Patricia Routledge), pronounced "Bouquet," is on an eternal quest to keep up appearances. Forever scheming ways to be thought richer and more important than she is, she's a terror to her husband Richard (Clive Swift), her family, her neighbors, and just about everyone she comes into contact with! Sadly for her, but fortunately for us, her schemes and plans always end in uproarious disaster. These are the adventures of Hyacinth Bucket, forever keeping up appearances!
My family and I are great fans of British comedy, and there are few anywhere near as good as Keeping Up Appearances! Patricia Routledge is one of Britain's comedic geniuses, and she plays Hyacinth beautifully. My kids sometimes get indignant at Hyacinth's many attempts at one-upmanship, but you always know that at the end, her sins will find her out.
This is a great Britcom, one that I highly recommend to all fans of good comedy! This particular tape has three half-hour episodes on it:
Viotlet's Country Cottage - Season 3, episode 4 (September 20, 1992) - Having borrowed her sister Violet's country cottage, Hyacinth meets the couple from the manor, whom she is dying to impress. However, the lady likes the bottle, while her husband likes...Hyacinth!
Driving Mrs. Fortescue - Season 2, episode 2 (September 8, 1991) - Hyacinth jumps at the chance to give Mrs. Fortescue (who's sister is married to a baronet) a lift into town. But, her joy soon turns to ash when they are flagged down by Hyacinth's embarrassing family. The odd thing is Mrs. Fortescue actually prefers them!
Country Estate Sale - Season 5, episode 6 (October 8, 1995) - When Hyacinth and Richard go to an estate sale, Richard has to wrestle with Hyacinth to keep her from bidding on everything. The one item they can afford is a set of 10 bottles of gooseberry wine brewed by the dowager Lady Ursula herself. The lord of the manor warns Hyacinth about, "Mummsy's dynamite," but before she knows it Hyacinth is smashed, and about to embarrass herself!
Hyacinth's hots just keep on coming!
Yet another 'Keeping up appearances' gem to add to my library. Three classic episodes, Violets country cottage, Driving Mrs. Fortescue, Country estate sale. You've heard about Hyacinth's sister with "room for a pony", now you get to see Violet's estate when Hyacinth borrows her house for an indoor/outdoor BBQ. This is one of my all time favorite episodes and I was so happy to find it in this collection.
Driving Mrs. Fortescue shows the only scenes of Hyacinth in a pub! Not the kind of place one would expect to be found when you are active in higher social circles.
The County estate episode was not one of my favorite episodes until I happened to watch it a few more times on this tape and I began to notice discreet incidences which had me in tears of laughter.
If you are a Keeping up appearances fan, this tape is a must for your collection.
