Customer Reviews of Jussi Björling: A Man, A Vocal Career (1930-1945)
Decide for yourself! The big debate among Jussiphiles is: Did he sound better when he was singing in Swedish? There are convincing arguments on all sides of the question. If you are one of those who likes to decide for yourself, buy "A Man, a Vocal Career". This CD presents several arias back to back, in Swedish and the original languages. I listened several times to the first of the four discs in this set before coming to the conclusion that Jussi would not allow clear pronunciation to come in the way of a clear musical tone. Let's face it - the only language in the world that is easy to sing is Italian. He stumbled a bit in his Italian pronunciation in his early years, but once he had the hang of it (by the time he was 21 or so) it was 'Katey bar the door!' His French pronunciation was always awful, but even Beverly Sills - eminently proficient in French - was often unintelligible when singing French. The French can't sing in French, for heaven's sake! Just try singing clear notes on "Salut! Demeure chaste et pure" (track 14 of Disc II) without mispronouncing the "u"s and "eu". Yet, this is no less enchanting music than its Swedish version (track 5, Disc IV).
At times I find the accompaniment on some tracks jarring - violins that don't quite hit the right note, brass made tinny by primitive recording techniques - but just wait a few seconds and Jussi will be there to reward your patience. And isn't this what music is all about - human striving for perfection and a willingness to overlook imperfection in the search for those brief, perfect moments.
You'll find plenty of them here. The 1944 recording of "Nessun dorma" is track 16 of Disc II. It is one of those rare, wonderful moments of perfection.
