Customer Reviews of Julia Varady - Richard Strauss (Salome, Ariadne, Danae, Capriccio) / Fischer-Dieskau
Fantasic singing from an underrated singer Julia Varady states "As a singer, one must regard Richard Strauss as Bel Canto", and that idea forms the basis of her interpretations for this disc. There is a long legato line throughout but it is never perturbed by her declamation of the text. Varady tackles a very wide range of music, from the psycotic teenager Salome to the sensual Countess of Capriccio, with stops at Ariadne and Danae along the way. She is an appropriatly loonly Salome, and it is quite hard to believe that this Salome is near 60! Her Ariadne has a noble greif about her, and Varady is heartbreaking in the monolouge and famous "Es gibt ein Reich." She does not hold on to that B-flat for very long, but this one of the most tender, beautiful recordings of this aria. She sings a glorious Countess in the final scene of Capriccio, and she makes this expcert seeming interest and gorgeous, a very difficult since this expert can seem a tad dull in some singers hands. The only problem is that there are no text. This isn't a big deal since most of the music is pretty familar, but it seems odd since the article raves about Varady's textual attention. All and all, a stupendous recording.
Julia - a very special singer
Varady is a very special singer. She made her debut in 1961. But up till only a year or 2 back did she retire. She sang this in 1999, and her Salome is one of the finest I ever heard. Note: Considering I possess the following Salome's final scene - Nilsson (3 versions), Rysanek (3 versions), Studer, Behrens, Welitsch (2 versions), Marton, Varnay, Norman - that is a very strong statement. Yes, her final scene is worth the price of this CD. To top it off, we have magnificent performances from Capriccio, Ariadne and Danae.
A superb recital disc.
