Customer Reviews of Judas Priest - Live in London
Ripper Rules! The Demolition Tunes Kick-[***]! The Demolition tunes sound so much better live on this dvd than the cd album. I don't know how to put it into words, but they sound much more like "classic" Priest; the guitars sound like they came right from the "Stained Class" album. Ripper has a commanding stage presence and can sign his nuts off. He actually sounds closer to Dio than Halford; personally I think thats a good thing.
The sound here is great...the drums and bass come thru loud and clear. Scott Travis has to be one of metal's top drummers. Tipton and Downing freakin' rip thru every track like it's the first time they ever stepped onto the stage.
Because this dvd was meant to promote the Demoliton album, the track list relies heavy on songs from that album while ommiting some classic Priest tunes like "Green Manalishi".
Regardless, this is one of the best dvds I own. The intro to "Victim Of Changes" gave me goose-bumps while I was banging my head back and forth. My kids think I nuts! But hey.. metal rules and you'll be breaking the rules (and the law) big timne if you pass on this dvd.
Get it now!
Still The Kings Of Metal
I must admit that I am now a "Ripper" convert.
After the departure of Rob Halford the Metal God I thought it would be the end of Judas Priest. Then they released the "Jugulator" album which I thought was their worst ever, and I feared my prophecy was coming true. I liked the following double live album Metal Meltdown because it contained classic Priest songs of old & Ripper Owens did a pretty good job of them. I found Demolition to be a step back in the right direction, but still not up to the Priest of old. Now I have changed my mind on that one, I love Demolition, and I love this DVD!
Ripper does a fantastic job of the old Priest songs and thankfully the newer tracks on the DVD are mostly from Demolition, not Jugulator.
The sound and picture quality is fantastic, and Priest put on a great show. The highlights for me are "Victim Of Changes" and "Painkiller" during which Rippers vocals are truely amazing.
No longer should he be compared to Halford and no longer should Priest fans hope for a reunion with him. I hope Ripper is in for the long run. His voice is suited for them and sounds fresh and enthusiastic. It is obvious that this rubs off on the band too because they also seem fresh & enthusiastic. I was also surprised at the drumming of Scott Travis, he is a drum machine!
I keep watching this DVD as it really kicks a#s, and often just have it blasting out (as a CD) as I do stuff around the house.
It also sounds better the louder you play it.
I am now kicking myself for not seeing them when they last toured Australia (I wasn't sure about Ripper, didn't like Jugulator, & wasn't then a big fan of Demolition), but if they tour here again nothing will keep me away.
The only criticism I have of this DVD is that the CD version contains several more tracks which don't appear on the DVD. Perhaps this is because they included backstage vision & sound checks instead? I think they would have been better to have done what Iron Maiden did with their Rock In Rio DVD - that is to put the concert on one DVD, and all the back stage stuff on another bonus DVD.
I like this DVD more than any other that I have. It is simply great, and I thuroughly recommend it for any fan of Judas Priest, new or old.
Now I eagerly await their next studio release.
Awesome DVD!
This is a great DVD.The set has a good mix of Demoliton material and classics.Thank God that most of the new material is from Demolition and not Jugulator.
Pros-
-Way better editing than the glam '86 Fuel For Life show.
In that DVD,a lot of camera time focuses on the audience.Almost all of it here focuses on the band.
-AWESOME versions of "Painkiller","Hell Bent For Leather",and "Victim Of Changes".
-A cool acoustic version of "Diamonds And Rust".
-Adding "Desert Plains" and "Running Wild" to the set.
These are both great songs that are so underrated.
-Ian Hill FINALLY gets some camera time. The man is basically ignored in the Fuel For Life video.
Cons:
-Ripper has a GREAT voice, but he bored me to tears with his stage presence. He does phony Rob Halford moves, and it is really annoying when he says"What's my name"?
-Having Ripper do the bike before "Painkiller".This was Halford's trademark and adds nothing to the show.
-"You've Got Another Thing Comin'" taken out,but "Livin' After Midnight" and "Breakin' The Law" left in.
-Nothing from Defenders Of The Faith at all."The Sentinel" at soundcheck doesn't count!
-Many great songs that were performed at the show weren't included. They should have done what they did with Iron Maiden's Rock In Rio DVD,and put the concert on 1 Disc and bonus features on 1 disc.
So if you are a Priest fan, this is one you should add to your collection.
