Customer Reviews of Journal of the Plague Year
Superb folk album from sixties survivor Few may remember Pearls Before Swine, and even fewer will recognize the name of Tom Rapp, but he and his "group" (which usually comprised of top-notch studio musicians) created some of the great folk-rock albums of the late sixties and early seventies. Earlier this year came the 30 Year retrospective "Constructive Melancholy," which collects his best songs from his Reprise label "middle period." In a just world that collection alone would elevator Rapp's status to one of our greatest songwriters (Just listen once to such masterpieces as "The Jeweler" and "Rocket Man"). Now we have this beautiful and well-produced album of new material from Woronzow Records. The tone of the album is mostly folk, though Tom does repeatedly exclaim a very popular obscenity in one of the last songs. My favorites -- today anyway -- are Hopelessly Romantic and Mars, though I also love Tom's arrangement of one of my favorite Yeats' poems in "Silver Apples." (especially the a cappella version which opens the album) If you don't know Tom Rapp's music, this is a great place to start. When you are hungry for more Rapp -- and you will be! -- then order up Constructive Melancholy.
A brilliant return
Tom hasn't skipped a beat after all these years. Wonderful songs, harps, Mars, and the Bevis Frond too! Thanks Tom, it's been worth the long wait.
