Customer Reviews of Johnny Mathis: Home for Christmas
Home for Christmas- -A Christmas Jewel This musical version of the quintessential-Merry Christmas- Album has a wonderful array of incredibly beautiful music along with gorgeous pictures of the Mathis family.I view it every Christmas and cherish the musical artistry of Mr Mathis and the comittment to excellence that is demonstrated. An earlier rewiewer was turned off by the fact that Mr Mathis was lip-synching to his own music. While this is true, remember that album was recorded in 1958.That did not detract one iota from my enjoyment.
What a Shame
This video is an insult to the intelligence of those who love the man, and, I feel, a blemish on the good work of Johnny Mathis. Anyone even remotely familiar with his music knows that dubbing the senior Mathis with the voice of the his teenage alter-ego is ridiculous and should never have been done. Liken it to the scene in the Christmas classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, where Rudy's father attempts to cover the shiny nose with mud. There was no need to cover up Johnny Mathis' voice. Mathis' voice today is a strong, full voice that is not as nasal-sounding as it was when he was a young man just starting out. He should have been allowed to sing these Christmas songs with the voice he has now. The Mathis of today has nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to his voice. I've been to four of his shows since 1989. I know.
Only the wonderful music, done as only Mathis has done and can still do, keeps this video from hitting rock bottom. If you want to hear how he sounded 40 years ago, buy the classic "Merry Christmas". If you want to hear how he sounds today, buy "Christmas Eve with Johnny Mathis." But if you want to see him sing the classic Christmas songs in his mature voice, go to a show in December, because you won't find the real deal here. This is less a music video than a bad home movie. Whoever thought of this bogus video should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves for making Johnny Mathis a joke. Let us hope that, if a similar project is planned in the future, a little more thought is put into it, along with a little more respect for Mr. Mathis' talents. END
