Customer Reviews of Johnny Carson - The Tonight Show - The Final Show
"I Bid You A Heartfelt Goodnight" "I Bid You A Heartfelt Goodnight"... Yes, those were the words "The King of Comedy" used to end his 30 year run as host of the ever-popular "Tonight Show" on May 22, 1992. And, indeed, that final night was a tear-jerker. Added to this, Johnny was still emotionally drained from the previous night, when he and guest Bette Midler gazed at each other like the best of friends as they softly sang the whole chorus to "Here's That Rainy Day", one of his favorite songs. Next we see Bette sitting atop a stool on a dimly lit stage, singing Johnny's farewell ballad, "One More For The Road". Truly, a touching performance, that will never be forgotten! NBC wanted to have a special primetime show with a star-studded audience. But, as Johnny put it: "We wanted to end the show, as we began... Nice and quietly... In our same timeslot... In front of our shabby, little set." He also said, he had thought it would have been funny to not show up at all and put on a rerun. "NBC did not find that funny, at all." I have watched this video innumerable times. My favorite part is the "Tonight Show Scrapbook" segment, where they show silent clips of the variety of different guests they had over the years. While these clips are running, Doc and the "Tonight Show Band" are playing the old swing classic, "Memories of You". The video is nearly identical to the one that aired on television, with a few minor edits. Get this video. You'll never regret it! This is also, now available in a dvd boxed set.
