Customer Reviews of John Jenkins: The Mirrour and Wonder of his Age
The mirrour of a 17th century English viol consort This CD features a selection of John Jenkins' consort music for four, five and six viols. Also included are a cross-section of his other works: Two suites for treble viol, bass viol and organ; some pieces for [solo] lyra viol; and divisions for 2 bass viols.
When viol consort music flourished in pre-civil war seventeenth century England, Jenkins (1592-1678), along with William Lawes, was a significant composer in the genre. Jenkins' consort music may not be as elaborate as Byrd or Gibbons, nor as distinctive and quirky as Lawes, but it does feature some very good part-writing.
Fretwork (probably the best viol consort around today) perform admirably and the recorded sound quality is excellent - so if you enjoy the sound of a consort of viols, give it a try.
