Customer Reviews of John & Yoko: A Love Story
a brilliant documentary of a wonderful couple This is the story of John Lennon's life with Yoko Ono. From the very day in November 1966 when they first met to the December 8,1980 murder of Lennon. Mark McGann is Lennon and Kim Miyori is Ono. On the day they meet at the Indica Gallery,John takes the liberty of eating an apple from a fruit bowl which was intended for a painting. Yoko is briefly angry with John. Back then, his band the Beatles, had abandoned touring and he was still married to his first wife Cynthia. The relationship began 18 months after the day John & Yoko first met. John and Cynthia were by then separated and about to be divorced. In '66,Yoko was married to her American second husband,Tony Cox,with whom she has a daughter,Kyoko. Also Brian Epstein, the Beatles' manager was alive(he fatally overdosed on drugs a year later). John,George,Paul and Ringo(last names need not be mentioned) mildly argue over dinner at a restaurant about who will manage the Beatles. Only Paul insisted that his future father-in-law manage. The other three chose Allen Klein. In '69,John and Yoko tie the knot near the Rock Of Gibraltar. While honeymooning in Canada,John and Yoko "give peace a chance". John wrote and recorded GIVE PEACE A CHANCE in the couple's hotel suite. They are constantly interviewed by the press while on their honeymoon. In '71,the Lennons immigrate to New York City. John fought for the next 5 years to be granted permanent residence in America(the couple were arrested in '68 in England for drug possession). Also, there's a custody battle over Yoko's daughter Kyoko. Cox was seeking permanent custody of Kyoko, and he won. In '72,John and Yoko do a concert at Madison Square Garden. Afterward,Yoko is upset because of the great reaction of her being with and working with her English-Irish third husband. So in '73,they separated. John went to Los Angeles and lived with Ringo,Keith Moon of The Who and Harry Nilsson. During the separation,John records the albums MIND GAMES,WALLS AND BRIDGES and ROCK AND ROLL. He does an excellent cover of STAND BY ME from the latter album. John often phoned Yoko telling her,"I wanna come home!". She denied his request until early '75. After the reconciliation,Yoko becomes pregnant with Sean Taro Ono Lennon born on October 9,1975 the day of John's 35th birthday,so Sean and his father are like twins. Sean is the second child for both John and Yoko. John's son Julian was born in '63 while married to Cynthia. Julian and Kyoko are both blessed with a half-brother. So John puts his musical career on hold until 1980,devoting himself and his time to his second child. In the summer of 1980,John returns to the studio to record the DOUBLE FANTASY album along with Yoko. He's back in the public eye, giving a series of interviews. In John's final hours,he and Yoko were recording MILK AND HONEY,posthumously released in 1984. After arriving home from the recording session,40-year-old John was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman,an insane fan who had earlier requested and received an autograph from John. 47-year-old Yoko remained a widow ever since. This telefilm,or TV movie features a great soundtrack of cover songs originally recorded by both John Lennon and The Beatles. Were the cover artists the same guys who starred in the Broadway musical Beatlemania? Those who saw this film also likely saw IMAGINE:THE DEFINITIVE PORTRAIT OF JOHN LENNON,a 1988 theatrical release. I dedicate this film to Lennon's memory(October 9,1940-December 8,1980).
A very under-rated movie!
It is a shame this movie never got the credit it deserved. When it aired in 1985, I missed it and couldn't wait for the re-run so I could record it. However, it didn't even get a second showing. The VHS version is scaled back just a bit, but none of the important story information was left out. McGann does a wonderful Lennon, capturing all of the different looks that John went through as his life progressed. This is a MUST see for any TRUE John Lennon and/or Beatles fan.
Very Insightful
This movie offers a very insightful look at John's last thirteen years. We get to see John and Yoko's first meeting at the Indica gallary, their contraversial efforts for world peace, their 18 month break-up, the miscarrages, and the birth of their son, Sean. The movie ends abruptly, but since this is about John Lennon, an abrupt and sad ending is unavoidable.
