Sega Rally 2 favors more of an arcade-style fantasy physics model than its predecessor, but don't expect this game to be a Sunday drive. Those looking for an exciting romp behind the wheel will likely be disappointed after numerous sideline crashes and races end prematurely due to expired time. Purists and road jockeys weaned on the likes of Gran Turismo may be able to handle the challenge factor here, but casual arcade-style racing fans may find the race too hot to handle for long-term, frustration-free fun. --Jeff Young
Pros:
- More replay value than the coin-op version of the game
- Beautiful graphics
Cons:
- Too hard to be fun for many arcade-style racing fans
- Backgrounds tend to pop up dramatically when the horizon is not obscured by curvy road

Customer Reviews of Sega Rally 2
Lacks the depth of Gran Torismo, but is still a good racer Sega Rally 2 is a perfect conversion of the arcade game on the Dreamcast, and there's also plenty of extras to keep you busy. Additional tracks, more cars to choose from, and the ability to customize your selected car add replay value. Keep in mind however, that Sega Rally 2 was originally designed with arcade play in mind. That means that it never approaches the depth of Sony's Gran Turismo games, and it's geared torward those who just like to pick up the controller and go. My only gripe is with the ridiculous difficulty of the game in the 10 year races mode. In some of the later tracks, you have to execute the race flawlessly in order to even get a decent rank. This gets extremely annoying, because you have to beat them in order to unlock all of the cars. Oh yeah, there's also some slowdown here and there. The game seems to switch framerate speeds in the middle of the action, but this can be fixed considerably with the 60 fps code (it removes effects like mud and water sprays to boost the game speed). If you are waiting for a racer with alot of depth to come out on the Dreamcast, you may want to pass this one up. If you just want a quick racing fix though, Sega Rally 2 should be enough to satisfy you.
A Good Contender in the Racing Genre
Just purchased Sega Rally 2 several days ago. I'm once again amazed with the graphical prowess of the Dreamcast. The physics model takes a little getting used to, but you get the hang of it in probably 30 minutes or less. The graphical details are phenomenal. Skid marks are accurate, and the vehicle gets dirty after racing on muddy courses. The headlights are also realistic. There is a relatively good variety of cars to choose from as well. There's a high replay value as you can experiment with virtually every aspect of your car. I personally think the game is great, but there seem to be others who do not. I would at least give it a shot.
Summary: Pros: Good graphics/details; Realistic Physics Cons: Music, Difficult on certain tracks ****
The Greatest Rally Racing Game of Them All?
When I heard that Sega Rally Championship 2 was coming out for Dreaamcast, I knew I had to have it. Let's be honest. No one makes arcade racers like SEGA (except maybe Namco). So when one of their best arcade racers comes home loaded with extras, you know you're in for treat.
To tell you the truth, I almost traded this game in right after I purchased it. Why? The arcade mode was unforgiving, and really just repeats itself after the first time. I thought I had been cheated. And then I tried the 10 year championship mode.
My oh my. The championship mode on this game has got to be one the greatest racing experiences that can be had on a game console. You have two view modes, both of them PERFECT. You have car customization, but not the boring, confusing, time wasting sort that has become common nowadays. You have SEGA arcade-style music, which I happen to love. You fantastic slip-and-slide physics which make controling the cars a blast. You have TONS of different variations on the race tracks (every one of them a perfect example of AWESOME track design). And lastly, you have some of the most beautiful graphics in any racing game ever. Honestly, the first time I raced a track at sunset, I was OVERJOYED that I didn't get rid of this game when I considered doing it. The most beautiful graphics in any racing game can (in my humble opinion) be found in the original Wipeout, and this game.
The only downside to this game is the simple fact that it's too hard. I simply CANNOT get past the 9th year in the 10 year championship. And forget about 1st place in arcade mode unless you're superman. But perhaps that's part of what makes this game so great. You keep coming back for one more go, because it's so darn fun and so darn hard. Better that than hard and not fun (I'm talking to you Nintendo). For arcade racing fans this game is an absolute must.
