Customer Reviews of Jane Eyre (Masterpiece Theatre, 2006)
One caveat.... My daughters and I loved this Masterpiece Theatre adaptation of Jane Eyre. I agree fully with the earlier reviewers that Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens are wonderful in their roles and the story moves along delightfully. The one drawback is the scene that another reviewer noted with Mr. Rochester's wife and another man. That scene is totally inappropriate for families with younger children and completely unnecessary for the story line. I would ask Masterpiece Theatre: "Why sully an almost flawless film?"
Well Done!
I must say I did not have very high expectations for this latest version of Jane Eyre. How many times has it been done? But, I will say I am proud to own this video and enjoyed every minute of it. I think it compares to Wives and Daughters, and is certainly one of the better BBC productions out there. Where many of the other versions are heavy, this one is actually funny in some places! Be prepared to be impressed. They took something wrote and made it into something wonderful.

>As an aside, I have seen some commentary on the "inappropriate" scene in which the insane wife is seen in a compromising position with another man. I think it is important to remember that Bronte was not writing a children's novel. This is indeed a grown up story, ultimately about a man who wishes to have an affair with another woman because his circumstances are a touch problematic, i.e. his wife is mad. Bronte was not interested in the fairy tale of the typical Austin romance. She wrote about the real interactions between men and women, and about how sometimes decisions are made for the wrong reasons, and ultimately how love can be redemptive. This scene is very brief and not that "inappropriate" when you take into consideration the story as a whole. Please don't let it deter you from enjoying this film and sharing it with your family.
