Settle in and get ready for the dish, because this Intimate Portrait of Jacqueline Susann plays like a gossip column sprung to life. It's dripping with stories and photos of big-name celebrities, catty comments, and you-are-there sound bites from the talk shows the best-selling author of Valley of the Dolls used to promote her books. Most unbelievable: she learns of JFK's assassination while on a publicity tour for Every Night, Josephine and says--according to the publicist who was with her--"Why is this happening to me?" Yet the author, who died of cancer at age 56, did share her universe with others, and many are interviewed here. Rex Reed, book editor Michael Korda, and girlfriends, including Cosmopolitan editor Helen Gurley Brown, recall with deep affection her brassy approach to life and close relationship with husband Irving Mansfield. An interview with Barbara Seaman, who wrote a Susann biography called Lovely Me, provides much of the backstory on an "insignificant actress" who willed herself into a '60s icon. --Valerie J. Nelson

Customer Reviews of Jacqueline Susann
Terrific Primer for . . . Writers, actors, or anyone entering or involved with the entertainment field. This documentary reveals the struggles and goals of actress turned 'unlikely' successive novelist, Jacqueline Susann. She dared to turn out unvarnished romance, dramas about Hollywood before the common era.
How did she plan her novels? How did she market successfully? Why did she give up her acting career? So much. After seeing this documentary and how Jacqueline Susann handled the critics, I purchased VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. It is a wonderful read. This video is a must for those interested in the arts!
