Customer Reviews of It Ain't Over
Paul stays in "Carrack-ter" with latest cd... I am sure Paul Carrack may know the beginning of many of his own reviews in his past by heart...the ones that say "You know the voice, but not the name". That's what I say when I tell my friends how great of artist/singer/song writer Paul Carrack really is. Sadly, there is nothing on this CD that will add to his "musical legend". While I wouldn't go as far as one reviewer who said,"Now each of his songs play as if created by a focus group of Adult Contemporary listeners", the tone of "It Ain't Over" does continue from his last 2 releases.
Still, there is no reason to dismiss "It Ain't Over". It's good from beginning to end. The sad part is that all of the tunes are much better that a lot of what you hear on radio today. Paul doesn't have a place on the radio, at least not here in the US. Not even adult contemporary! It's a shame too, because there are a few tunes on "It Ain't Over" that are worthy of that airplay. "She Lived Down the Street", "Happy to See You Again" and "Empty Space" would fit nicely.
Bottom line, if your a Paul Carrack fan, then this is something to add to your collection. If your a more recent convert to Paul, buy the "One Good Reason" CD and the "Paul Carrack in Concert" DVD. You will not go wrong with any of them.
Highly enjoyable
One of the most talented artists in music history does it again. Another excellent collection of work by Paul Carrack! Hearing Paul's vocals on this new CD made me realize why he has always been so enjoyable to listen to. Not only is his voice a perfect match to the music level but his uncanny ability to harmonize with the notes is remarkable. Not only does he add to the quality of the music with his voice but his words are prefectly melted with each song.
If your purchasing this CD be sure to check out Paul's collection of work over the years. You won't be dissapointed :).
Welcome to musical oblivion
In recent years, Carrack has been busily whittling away all the characteristics that made him unique. He has succeeded. Now each of his songs plays as if created by a focus group of Adult Contemporary listeners. Listening to this bland soup, one would never know that Carrack is (was?) a superior keyboard player, or that he made a fine album like Suburban Voodoo. This effort reminds me of Karl Kraus' aphorism: "She lacked only a flaw to be perfect." Like a person who has all distinguishing characteristics removed by plastic surgery, Carrack no longer has rough edges, or a reason to be taken seriously as a musician. Compare his slide into oblivion with another long-time pop artist, Robert Palmer, who never stopped taking chances, and went out on a distinctively creative high with his CD "Drive"
