Customer Reviews of Ironman
Space Ghost From Coast To Coast Just as Terminator X was Public Enemy's secret weapon, The RZA is The Wu-Tang Clan's: While other members get all the attention, producer RZA, quietly working behind the scenes, has been the force behind Wu-Tang's raw, all over the map, Bruce Lee-meets-Gladys Knight sound.
RZA has done it again on Ghostface Killah's Ironman, arguably the best of the group's "solo" albums to date. Attacking from all angles, Ironman is classic Wu-Tang, piecing together Al Green and Jackson 5 samples, gospel choruses, kung fu soundbites and piano vamps into something unpredictable and vital-sounding.
With guest rappers like Method Man, Raekwon and U-God on virtually every track, it may as well be a Wu-Tang album. There's even a ballad with Mary J. Blige, on which Ghostface Killah raps, "Word up, MommyI love you."
What Can I say?? It's a classic
This is right up there with Liquid Swords and Only Built For Cuban Linx. It has the gambino mafia type of stuff that we all like, the interesting lyrics, and just plain WU. There were a lot of just plain great songs in here. Like Iron Maiden, a fast tempo song that's sort of not Wu style. 260, a great beat with Ghost and Rae telling a story about a dope deal. Wildflower, a song where Ghost gets mad at his ex-wife. Faster Blade, a Raekwon single promoting Wu-Tang. Winter Warz, probly the best song on this album, it's known for Cappadonna's 2 minute MURDER session. I think that as a listener you will every single song on here enjoyable. Now, don't think that you will purely enjoy this album...because there are some low points, not major ones, but it does exasperate me. Everyone will say this, it's Ghostface's GODDAMN lyrics...sometimes you just can't comprehend what in the world he is talking about. But who can you blame execpt yourself for not understanding all that. It's like he's talking in hieroglyphics. There will be 1 or 2 songs that will have you confused at the topic, but that won't stop you from enjoying this album
Album #6 from Wu
Wu Tang hit big in 1993 with their debut 'Enter The 36 Chambers', and followed it up well with solo albums by Method Man in 1994, and Ol Dirty Bastard, Chef Raekwon, and Genius/GZA in 1995. So when Ghostface dropped the 5th solo album 'Ironman' in 1996, most people thought Wu Tang couldn't do anything wrong. Unfortunately, instead of blessing us with 'Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt. II', Ghostface leans more towards Method Mans album, meaning instead of hardcore beats & rhymes, he brings in Mary J Blige to sing R&B hooks over soft songs, and some of the other stuff here also sounds more like its trying to get radio play than street play. This was also the first Wu Tang album where RZA didn't produce 100%. Other guys come in to lay some beats, and overall 'Ironman' doesn't have as much of the distinctive Wu flava that the last few albums had.
Don't get me wrong, its not a bad album, theres also a lot of cool razor sharp-RZA beats and Ghostface shows a lot of skills. But it was the earliest sign of slipping from the crew, as well as softening their sound in order to get paid. I guess its kind of ironic that these days Ghostface is the only Wu emcee who still has a lot of credibility on the street, maybe he's developed? I don't check for the new Wu Tang albums anymore so I can't say. But 'Ironman' is a cool album for Wu fans, not up there with their 1993 and 1995 albums, but still strong.
