Customer Reviews of Invincible
Hello Mr. Invincible (2.5-3 stars) Admittingly Michael Jackson is among my favourite entertainers of all time, so I waited patiently for his 2001 release ''Invincible''. Upon hearing ''You Rock My World'', I was instantly disappointed. However Michael Jackson doesn't always necessarily release one of the better tunes off an album as the first single release e.g. ''The Girl Is Mine'' (Thriller), ''I Just Can't Stop Loving You'' (Bad), ''Black Or White'' (Dangerous) and ''Scream'' (HIStory), I reclaimed my faith in the project and I couldn't wait till I finally had the album in my greasy little hands.
So now almost three years later, ''Invincible'' still remains a huge disappointment in my opinion. The lack of melodies and the need for displaying Michael Jackson as a current hipster fall flat on its feet. Michael Jackson has always been seen as a ''setter'', not a follower, and the latter is what ''Invincible achieved in the end. However the 2001 release isn't all bad. It does have several good cuts and Michael Jackson's voice hasn't sounded better since the early eighties.
The album opens with the bouncy and percussion-driven ''Unbreakable'', which sees Michael Jackson addressing his enimies with the lines ''You can try to stop me, but it won't do a thing/No matter what you do, I'm still gonna be there/Through all your lies and silly games/I'm a still remain the same, I'm unbreakable''. Its catchy chorus and head-bumping beat are quite infectious, still it doesn't come to pare with any of his former superb, funky up-tempo tracks. I really liked the beat upon hearing the song for the first time and it's one of the better up-tempo offerings on the album, yet it sounds quite dated already.
The second collaboration with Rodney Jerkins on the album is entitled ''Heartbreaker''. Once again we are moving into one of Michael Jackson's favourite territories: the woman as the persuader. Yes it's catchy and enjoyable, but Michael Jackson should write songs like ''Heartbreaker'' in his sleep and then use them as b-sides or release them later.
''Invincible'' is my least favourite among the three pop/hiphop orientated offerings that MJ and Rodney Jerkins produced together. Its overproduced sound and silly lyrics are hideous to say the least. The song doesn't state how invincible Mick Jack really is. The girl of his dream has a tendency to ignore him, so he is hell-bend on getting her to notice him. So he tries to woo her like no other man has done before him.
Next up are the two lovely ballads ''Break Of Dawn'' (appears on ''Number Ones'') and ''Heaven Can Wait''. The former one is a lovely gem dedicated to that of love making. Its lovely melody and infectious chorus adds ''Break Of Dawn'' to one of the better offerings on ''Invincible''. ''Heaven Can Wait'' is quite nice as well. I still enjoy the intro ''you are beautiful, incredible, I love you so''. A classic love song.
''You Rock My World'' landed Michael Jackson a top 2 hit in the UK and a top 10 hit in the US (I believe), yet the catchy offering didn't have the magnitude many of his lead singles have had in the past and it was quickly deemed a ''flop'' by the media. The short film for ''You Rock My World'' didn't generate much interest for the song as well though his hard-core fanbase went out and bought the single anyway and made it a ''minor'' hit around the globe.
The best song on the album belongs to ''Butterflies''. This is one of Michael Jackson best songs in a decade or so. US listeners were treated to the song as several urban radio station played it like crazy and it helped sell the album in the US in my opinion. It even consists of an amazing vocal performance from Michael Jackson and lovely background vocals from Marsha Ambrosius.
Michael Jackson has always contributed with his own compositions to each of his solo album, however on ''Invincible'' we only find two of these ''Speechless'' and ''The Lost Children''. Usually his own material often turns out to be among the better songs on a album. That can't be said for these two rather bland songs. ''Speechless'' isn't all bad. I really like the verses as Michael Jackson is capable of conveying emotions, however the repetitive nature of the chorus leaves me cold.
Deservingly of a mention would include the slinky ''Whatever Happens'' featuring Carlos Santana on guitar. It was among my faves on the album and still remains so. It showed an artistic growth and an interest in experimenting with a different genre. I wish I could say the same for the rest of the album. ''Cry'' was released as the second single in Europe though without Michael Jackson in the video and the public didn't seem to care much for the song , it charted very low almost everywhere. Not a bad song, but certainly not among his better ballads.
And then there is the really poor ones. IMO ''Invincible'' does contain several of Michael Jackson least impressive songs like ''You Are My Life'', ''Privacy'' and ''Don't Walk Away''. How they even managed to appear on the album is beyond me. ''2000 Watts'' and ''Threatened'' are somewhat acceptable, yet nothing special.
Despite having several top-notch songs on the album- ''Butterflies'', ''Whatever Happens'' and ''Break Of Dawn'', the overall quality doesn't hold a candle to previously studio albums by Michael Jackson. It is as if Jackson and his producers tried to make him accessible to the young crowd, however when it was released it already sounded date and bland. The album seems to lack focus with a ramble of different sounds.
''Invincible'' is mainly for the hard-core Michael Jackson fans, who is in the need for anything the musical genius has ever released. Not a need in your collection though it does have its moments.

The King is Back!!!!
While many critics with "trained ears" are being unecessarily hard on MJ for this album, his die hard fans will definetely appreciate his momentum.
The truth is that there is nothing new on this album. The fact that MJ is the greatest entertainer in the world is not a new idea. However MJ does explore the realm of R&B heavily in this album.
The first track, "Unbreakable", is high energy with a lot of Hip Hop beats including a rap from the late Biggie Smalls. This occurs too for "Unbreakable" and "Invincible", which feature the new talent of Fats.
Mike starts his ballads with "Break of Dawn" and "Heaven Can Wait". These two songs are definitely reminescent of Mike's "Lady in My Life" days.
In "2000 Watts" and "Privacy", Rodney Jerkins produced himself into a flurry. These fast-paced, highly mechanic songs are genius.
"Whatever Happens" includes a guitar solo by the wonderful Carlos Santana. Hearing these two legends perform together is simply magical.
And finally, "Threatened" is "Thriller" for 2001. MJ does like to scare people.
While Invincible is heavily populated with famous producers, and does sound like the workings of artists like Usher, and Ginuwine, there is no mistaking that this sort of brilliance can only come from the King of Pop.
The very definition of "underrated"
When people say the name Michael Jackson what do think of? The first thing that comes to my mind is the word King. The man had out sold Elvis, The Beatles, and everyone else. Because he is the greatest artist of all time! This album should be up with greats like Bad and Dangerous. Face it people, he wont top Thriller. So why compare eveything else to it? I have listened to Invincible more than Thriller myself. It is the album of my generation. It beats anything else out there now. Forget about these stupid molestation charges and the damn plastic surgery. Listen, with an open mind to the music.
Unbreakable- Strong start, Michael is back with vengeance. The rap by Biggie works well here. It is a pop song with a hip hop edge. 5/5
Hearbreaker- A trendy dance track that works well. The lyrics are great. 4/5

Don't Walk Away- It's nice, I like the guitar in it. not as good as the other ballads. 4/5
Cry- A great peace anthem. R. Kelly is an excellent songwriter. 5/5
The Lost Children- It's a good song, I pictured a video for this with pictures of missing kids and a number on the screen. Something like that. Of course there would be a story going on. 4/5
Whatever Happens- Amazing song, Santana's guitar work is excellent. One of the best on the album. 5/5
