Customer Reviews of Inside Out: Portraits of Children
An Extraordinary Journey Into Childhood Inside Out is such a compelling combination of real life and wonder. Clearly, Ms. Lipper would make an extraordinary therapist. That those children shared their inner lives with such trust and such a lack of self-consciousness is a testament to the connection she made with them. I was extremely touched by the film. I loved that the filmmaker included so many different children, from different worlds - I cried and smiled and all the while felt privileged to have been invited into that very unique universe.
The abundance of imagination
This film reminds adults about the abundance of imagination. The children in this film expect the impossible and talk with fairies. We adults could relearn what it is like to see beauty in the ordinary and expect the extraordinary every day of our lives. A beautifully filmed video.
Reclaiming the spirit of childhood
I have been told that the ancient Greeks had a word for the impoverished state of being when one lacks a deep and sustained experience with the beautiful. I believe the word is apocalyia. Joanna Lipper's movie is a spiritual tonic for anyone in the midst of apocalyia. It is a deep and moving movie that reminds us how we feel when we experience the beautiful in everyday life. Moreover, the movie connects us to the beautiful without romanticizing or simplifying childhood experience. The "portraits" are not sentimental or superficial in the least. The children in the movie are portrayted with depth, respect and irony. Their stories are full of the various dynamics of modern life---divorce, blended families, mobility, globalization, etc. Yet, the resilience and endurance of the children's imaginations weave through the film with a subtle fierceness. The children remind us that the power of imagination is greater than the power of money, the power of access, and the power of force. The real power of the movie is that it helps us reclaim our own imagination in its full force and not settle for a romanticized remembrance of things past.
