For those of you who never had the chance to play Independence War, here's the lowdown: The strait-laced Navy is fighting an epic battle in space against the wily Indies. In a welcome departure from most simulations of this type, you command a large capital ship instead of a fragile fighter--it's a little like being in command of the Enterprise, only your ship is much more maneuverable.
Independence War was hailed for its realistic physics model. Thrusting in one direction requires an equal amount of thrust in the opposite direction to stop, since neither friction nor fictional sci-fi braking systems exist in this game. This approach makes for a game that is a little tough to get used to in the beginning, but it allows for some really cool tactics as your skills build.
The Defiance expansion pack bundled in the Deluxe Edition lets you play out much of the original campaign again, only this time you command an Indie ship and see how things looked from the other side. It also comes with all the other goodies add-on packs are famous for, such as new weapons, improved graphics, and gameplay additions like the ability to issue commands to other ships.
If you like space simulations, Independence War Deluxe Edition is not to be missed, but there is one catch: The absolutely beautiful graphics this game is famous for will reveal their full glory only if you have a 3-D accelerator card that supports Glide. But for space sim fans who have a video card with a Voodoo chipset, or those who can live with some toned-down graphics, your spaceship has come in. --T. Byrl Baker

Independence War = REALISTIC space action I had heard many things about this game and found it at a store near me. So I bought it. The game captivated me from the first moment. The opening movie is action packed and of TV episode quality. The game play itself is incredible. The physics and controls of the ship are very easy to use and yet have such complex results. For example, "strafing" around your opponent is possible. What really makes me happy with this game, however, is the realism of the missions. Not one mission is a simple shoot-emup. Every mission involves strategy, puzzle solving, and realistic goals. In one mission you have to destroy asteroids headed for your base. In another you have to find a ship to fly. In yet another you have to go do some extra weapons training, when suddenly things go awry. Excellent excellt excellent. The only problem I have with this game is the difficulty level. These levels are no cinch. The difficulty level ramps up pretty fast.
Good Game
I got Independence War only a few weeks after it was released in the States, and I still stuck up another thirty bucks to get the Deluxe addition; even though it only has 18 new missions. I think that says a bit about this game.
But, the best part about I-War is not its single player campaign (as much as I enjoyed it), but the thriving online community that has sprung up around it and the amazing customization ability of the game.
The developer of I-War, Particle Systems, has a Mission Development Kit you can download off their site. You can make, or download, Lightwave models of your favorite ships and fly them. You can even make entirely new star systems for goodness sakes!
If you were disappointed by Sierra canceling its Babylon 5 game, buy I-War. The Buda5 conversion is nearing completion. Just the other day I flew a Starfury against two Minbari cruisers with two Hyperions backing me up.

When I first bought this game I didn't know what to expect for the 20$ dollars I paid at best buy. But as soon as it was installed on my computer it was obvious that this was a good game.From the 14 minute opening video to the last action intense missions this game is great. Even after beating the original 40 mission game you get the new 18 mission Indie campaign which features a cool customized ship with a new paint job and several new features, including a handy zoom mode that allows for long range sniping of those commonwealth bastards. In the Indie campaign also allows you to configure your ship to your individual weapons preference. That means double front PBC's all the time. This game is one that does not end after you beat it once. You can go back and add you own ship models to the game (yes I have destroyed the the UNO in a TIE fighter and the Starship Enterprise) You can build your own ship models and add them to the game. You can also download pre-built ships and missions from numerous web pages. BUY THIS GAME ! IT IS DEFINITELY A GOOD DEAL AT 25$$
