Customer Reviews of Impossible Dream
More Greatness!! I was a bit hesitant to buy this cd simply because '1000 Kisses'is such a great album and I thought that Patty couldn't top it...well I was wrong!! In my opinion, this is Patty's best since 'Living With Ghosts'. She continues to write heart-breaking songs and sings them with the kind of raw emotion that captivates me. My favorite songs on this album are 'Kites' and 'Useless Desires'. If you liked 1000 Kisses then you will love this cd as well. Patty is the woman!!
Fire the producer
Patty Griffin's songs and singing and guitar playing are wonderful here, as always. The gospel colors of "Love Throw a Line" and "Standing" make these songs real standouts.
Sadly, the producer, clearly carried away with himself, got in the way of too many of these songs. There are horns and synthesizers and swollen choruses of backing vocals (think Nashville at its worst), there are sticky-sweet guitar accompaniments (think Nanci Griffith's dinging elevator, repeated ad nauseum), but nary a clear harmony vocal to be heard, despite contributions from Emmylou Harris and Buddy & Julie Miller. What a disappointment! Patty Griffin is one of the best singer-songwriters around, and she deserves a producer who lets her shine. One who GETS her.
If you want a better introduction to her music---and if you don't know it yet, you should---try Living with Ghosts or 1000 Kisses instead. Or better yet, catch her on tour this summer.
impossible to get out of my changer
I now know what it must be like to be heroin addict. Since buying this cd a month ago, I have been unable to keep from hearing it at least once a day. I am particularly addicted to
"Useless Desires" and "When it Don't Come Easy". I do not believe I have ever heard two songs on the same cd that have ever had this effect on me. And now, sadly, I am discovering how great the remainder of the album is. I may never be able to get it out of my changer. At least I still have five other slots.
The combination of Patty's writing and vocalizations is something
so rare, I can't think of any current singers other than Don Henley who compares. Buy this cd and you will surely be compelled to explore more of Patty's undeniably brilliant work.
